"Will you come and follow me if I but call your name"
from The Summons by John L. Bell reference Mark 1:17
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John woke up early that morning and made their way down to the seashore as they had many, many mornings before - as they probably anticipated they would do all their adult life.  After all that is what they had been trained to do since childhood - to continue the family business - fishing the Sea of Galilee.  Until, that is, an itinerant carpenter turned untrained rabbi came upon them at their work, and in an instant made a complete change in their life's vocation.

One can only imagine from this scene the compelling character of this young Galilean whose personal invitation - "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" - could have elicited such a dramatic response from these seasoned fishermen: "immediately they left their nets and followed him."  Have you met him?  If you have you also know just how compelling a person he is.  It doesn't matter if you have believed that your life's work is elsewhere - when he calls we must follow because he alone fully knows the way and the unique purpose of our lives.  He calls each one: fishermen, shepherds, businessmen and women, young and old - there is no race distinction, no gender distinction, no academic distinction, no age distinction (remember Abraham was 75 and Moses 80 when they were called by God!)

This is his summons in the words of the hymn of the same name by John L. Bell

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known,
Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen,
And admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Will you love the "you" you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around,
Through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

May our response be the same as that of Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John

Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In your company I'll go where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
