 The Baptism of Our Lord

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Collect for the Baptism of Our Lord

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

When seven year old Bobbi was asked by his teacher to define love he replied: "Love is what is in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

Love is what the shepherds found in the manger after listening to the message of the angels.  Love is what the wise men found after following the leading of the star.  Love is what the Prophetess Anna and old Simeon saw when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple.  Love is what was present at Good Shepherd on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  And Love still abides, for Love himself took on human flesh and chose to tabernacle amongst us.

We have entered the season of Epiphany, of the revealing of the light and love of Christ.  Through Baptism we have received the Holy Spirit who shines that love and light into our hearts, and we are to be his light-bearers into the darkness.  We are to Epiphany, to reveal Christ, in ourselves.  The question is how much room will we give to the darkness and how much room to the light.

St John has this caution for us: "This is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light ... everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light ... whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God." John 1:19-20.  The works of darkness are condemnation, judgment, gossip, unforgiveness.  The works of light and love are encouragement, kindness, forgiveness, works of charity.

If we permit ourselves to be commissioned by the Enemy to spread darkness then the Lord cannot bless us for he cannot partake of darkness, but if we walk in the light and reveal his love then his blessings will abound.  May it be said of us that here is revealed the love of Christ, here his light shines forth, here blessings abound.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Epiphany House Blessings
The Epiphany Season is a perfect time to schedule a House Blessing if you have not had one.  There is a beautiful liturgy that is used from the Episcopal Book of Occasional Services.  We walk through the house cleansing each room with Holy Water and praying in the light of Christ, and conclude with a home Eucharist.  If you would like to schedule a House Blessing please email Rev'd Sarah here.  The most convenient times are on Thursday afternoons or early evenings.

Invitation to the
Annual Parish Meeting

Sunday, January 22nd
Please join us for the Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday, January 22nd after the 10:30 am service.  We will have lunch together in the Parish Hall, hear reports of what the Lord has done this last year through the ministries at Good Shepherd and where he seems to be leading us in 2012.
We will also elect new members to the vestry and acknowledge the
service of those who are retiring from the vestry this year.

 CRAFT FAIR?
A few people have been discussing the possibility of having a craft fair on the campus on April 15 (the weekend after Easter and the same weekend as the Spring Maitland Arts Festival) as a fundraiser.  As you will note from the budget we do not have enough in pledge and plate income to cover all our expenditures and need to find other creative means to sustain the ministries at Good Shepherd.  If you are interested in participating in the planning and/or having a booth please email Rev'd Sarah here
