Collect
 4th Sunday of Advent

Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"Are you the one to build me a house to live in?" 2 Samuel 7:1-11
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

After many years of battles King David knew peace, and was settled in Jerusalem in a beautiful house of cedar, and decided that he should build a house for God.  On the face of it a seemingly noble project.

But God, through the prophet Nathan, reminds David of a few facts about the human/divine relationship.  First of all any endeavor on behalf of God must be first prompted by God, not merely human devising.  Secondly, God had never been absent from David's life: in the sheepfolds, in his life on the run from Saul, in all his battles.  God had never needed a house built by human hands to be with him.

In fact, God says, it is not David who will build God a house, but God who will build David a house - a house that will last forever.  It is also the house in which God will dwell.  For the "house" and the "throne" of which he speaks is a human/divine baby of the line of David.  A promise fulfilled a millenium later when an Angel announces to Mary: "you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.  He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David."

He is born to us and for us - Emmanuel - God with us.

Join us as we celebrate the fulfillment of the promise on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
