Collect

1st Sunday of Advent
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

We enter this Advent season looking backwards and forwards at the same time.  Sunday's passage from the Prophet Isaiah (64:1-9) reminds us of our desperate need for a savior - even our "righteous deeds" are like "filthy rags" - what then must our sins look like!  But, because our God in his mercy showed forth the light of his countenance (Ps 80:3, 7, 18), through the face of a helpless baby in a manger, a baby who would grow and shed his pure blood for us, we have been made blameless.  Our filthy rags exchanged for his pure raiment.

As we prepare our hearts to welcome the Christ child once again, we lean into the hope given us in the words of the adult Christ who has promised to return and to gather his own from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.  To that time when sin, suffering and death will be dealt with once and for all, when we will all, those living and those who have died in Christ, receive our resurrected bodies and inherit a new heaven and a new earth.

Just as the prophecies of the first coming came to pass, so also will the promised second coming come to pass in the Father's perfect time.  But in the time between the master has left us in charge (Matt 13:34), fully equipped with every spiritual gift to accomplish the work at hand (1 Cor 1:7).

May we not let go of our hope, may we wait with joyful expectation for Christ's return, as we prepare to celebrate his first coming, all the time faithfully engaging in the work for which he has so abundantly equipped us.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Taize Candlelit Prayer Services
Wednesday Evenings during Advent

Instead of it being a contemplative season during which we  ready ourselves for the coming of the Prince of Peace Advent oftentimes becomes one of the most harried and stress-filled seasons of the year.

Join us in the Chapel each Wednesday in Advent as we quiet our hearts by spending time in silent prayer; singing the meditative songs of Taize; and hearing the voice of the Lord in his Holy Word.
