Collect

22 Pentecost

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Well done, good and faithful servant.  You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.  Enter into the joy of your master.  Matthew 25:21
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Immediately prior to his betrayal, trial, torture, death, and resurrection Jesus tells three parables which point to his return, to his second coming, to the Day of the Lord.  In the first of the parables, The Parable of the Ten Virgins, we learn that the bridegroom was delayed, and in this Sunday's parable, The Parable of the Talents, we hear that it is not until after "a long time" that the master returns.  For no one knows when that day will be, "not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." (Matt 24:36)

The parables are not about when he will return but about what we will do with what we have been given as we await his return.  Will we be faithful to the trust that the Lord has placed in us by bestowing on us gifts to multiply his kingdom work?  He has blessed us in order that we might be a blessing.

We are not to compare our talents to others.  We are not to consider our talents as inconsequential.  We are not to bury our talents.  The Lord perfectly knows our abilities and his expectations are always aligned with the gifts he has bestowed on us.  To the one who refuses to use their gifts appropriately Jesus has this caution - the gifts will be taken away and given to those who will be faithful in the appropriate use of their gifts as they await the Lord's return.  And these latter will receive a great reward.  As they pass through the veil they will hear the Lord speak these words - the words I long to hear - words that perhaps we all long to hear:

"Well done, good and faithful servant.  You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.  Enter into the joy of your master."

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Worship Services Next Weekend
Next Saturday, November 19 is the special convention to elect the Fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Central Florida.  (Please hold the nominees and the convention in prayer this week and particularly next Saturday)  Since the ending time of the convention is unknown in place of the 5:00 pm Eucharist the Office of Evening Prayer will be celebrated.  George Madill, Officiant.

Dr. Garwood (Woody) Anderson, Associate Professor of New Testament and Greek, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Nashotah House Theological Seminary (my alma mater) will be our guest preacher at both the 8:00 am and 10:30 am services on Sunday, November 20.  Woody will be in town as the guest preacher at the special convention Eucharist and has graciously accepted the request of a friend to share his gifts with us as well.  You might want to invite a friend - it will be a special treat!

Acts Class
Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 in Roberta's Hall as we enter into first century Palestine and beyond as the Gospel message spreads from its Jewish roots to far flung reaches of the Gentile Roman Empire.  What challenges did its early messengers face?  Are there similarities for today's messengers?  What were some of the internal conflicts within the early communities?  Do we face similar struggles?  Come and be encouraged by these early pioneers of the faith and inspired by their testimony.

Thanks to all who contributed and helped pack up the boxes.  There was the perfect amount for the 15 boxes for which we had requests and addresses.  A couple of families have offered to bake more if there is the need.

We will have a Service of Thanksgiving in the Chapel on Wednesday, November 23 at noon.

A Prayer for discernment in the call of the next bishop: Be with us and guide us, Holy Spirit, as we seek your will for the future of our diocese. Help us to discern the needs and hopes of your people in Central Florida, so that our search for a Bishop may proceed with clear vision and joyful obedience.  In the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen.
