Collect

All Saints

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

All Saints 2
for all the saints
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

When greeting the Christians in his letters to the churches he has founded, visited, or hopes to visit, Saint Paul addresses them as "saints:" "to the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae" (Colossians 1:2); "To the church of God that is in Corinth, including all the saints throughout Achaia" (2 Corinthians 1:1)

For Saint Paul "saints" are those "who are sanctified in Christ Jesus .. those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours" (1 Corinthians 1:2)  In other words all Christians are "saints."  Not because of anything we have done but because of what Christ has done for us, and because of who we are in Christ.  Through Baptism we are "no longer strangers and aliens, but citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God" (Ephesians 2:19)  It is the Father "who has enabled [us] to share in the inheritance of the saints in light" (Colossians 1:12) through the work of His Son on the cross.

As the collect notes we are knit together in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of Christ: with the saints throughout the world today and with the saints who have entered into the nearer presence of the Lord in glory.  There is a veil that separates us that we pass through when we die, that is gossamer thin at the Eucharist when the Lord's hand reaches through the veil to feed us with himself as he feeds his saints triumphant in the heavenly banquet.

But there is a time when the veil will be no more, when the Lord Jesus will come with all his saints (1 Thess 3:13), when the saints militant and the saints triumphant will receive their resurrection bodies in a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1-3), when death will be no more, when sin will be no more.  In the words of W. Walsham How's familiar hymn:

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day:
The Saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of glory passes on his way.  Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.  Alleluia!

Come, Lord Jesus!  Come!

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Acts Class
Beginning November 13 at 9:30 am in Roberta's Hall Jim Sutton will present a class on the Acts of the Apostles.  We will be viewing the verbatim video reenactment of Saint Luke's second book.  Join us as we enter into first century Palestine and beyond as the Gospel message spreads from its Jewish roots to far flung reaches of the Gentile Roman Empire.  What challenges did its early messengers face?  Are there similarities for today's messengers?  What were some of the internal conflicts within the early communities?  Do we face similar struggles?  Come and be encouraged by these early pioneers of the faith and inspired by their testimony.

A Prayer for discernment in the call of the next bishop: Be with us and guide us, Holy Spirit, as we seek your will for the future of our diocese. Help us to discern the needs and hopes of your people in Central Florida, so that our search for a Bishop may proceed with clear vision and joyful obedience.  In the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen.
