| Collect 20 Pentecost | | Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. They do all their deeds to be seen by others
Matthew 23:5

Dearly Beloved in Christ,
This evening (All Hallows Eve) lots of children, and a few adults, will be donning costumes, pretending to be someone they are not. This is the charge that Jesus is leveling against the Pharisees in Sunday's Gospel reading - they are pretending to be what they are not. Whereas dress-up on Halloween is done mostly in fun, the pretense of the Pharisees is serious business. Their external show of holiness is just that - show. Their motivation is pride: to be well thought of by others.
None of us are exempt from Jesus' searchlight into the motivation of our hearts. Do teachers teach so that others will think they are academically gifted or so that their students will learn? Do people cook so that others will think they are accomplished chefs, or so that people are well fed? Do people visit those in hospital because they need to be needed or to bring comfort to the sick? Do preachers preach so that others will think much of their oratory skills or so that God's character and his truths are made known? In other words is the spotlight on us or the other? Pride was the reason for Adam's fall, and it continues to haunt us (seasonal pun intended!)
The question is this - who is our audience? Is it our fellow man or is it God? If we are consumed by how we are perceived by others then our lives will be marked by competition and pride. If we are focused on pleasing God and being obedient to him there is no room for competition or pride for he knows our character - and he loves us anyway! We have nothing to prove to God. But we can be improved by God - it is the work of his Holy Spirit to make us like Jesus from the inside out - not by the mere wearing of a mask but by an internal transformation. Such a life is marked by authenticity - there is a congruence between external actions and internal character.
May we learn to live our lives for an audience of One, allowing the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to change our character into the character of Jesus so that what we do and what we say comes from his life within us.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord, Rev'd Sarah+ |

ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION CLASSES
There will be no adult Christian formation class on All Saints Sunday, November 6.

Beginning November 13 at 9:30 am in Roberta's Hall Jim Sutton will present a class on the Acts of the Apostles. We will be viewing the verbatim video reenactment of Saint Luke's second book. Join us as we enter into first century Palestine and beyond as the Gospel message spreads from its Jewish roots to far flung reaches of the Gentile Roman Empire. What challenges did its early messengers face? Are there similarities for today's messengers? What were some of the internal conflicts within the early communities? Do we face similar struggles? Come and be encouraged by these early pioneers of the faith and inspired by their testimony. |

Baked Goodies Packages Please help us to reveal Christ's love and ours to those who are serving in the military or who are away from home at college by bringing home-baked goodies to the church on November 12th thru 13th. If you have a family member away from home in the military or in college and would like them to receive a baked goods package please fill out one of the forms available in the Church Office or in the Church or Chapel narthex. The packages will be mailed by November 18th. Donations to cover postage will also be accepted.

We will have a Service of Thanksgiving in the Chapel on Wednesday, November 23 at noon.
