19 Pentecost

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Which commandment of the Law is the greatest?
Matthew 22:36

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The lawyer, a student of The Law - Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy), poses this third and final question to test Jesus: which of the 613 ordinances, identified by the rabbis in Torah, is the greatest?  An open-ended question - whatever Jesus' response the student of the Law assumes that he will be able to discredit Jesus' response in theological debate.  Jesus will be revealed to be no more than a Galilean carpenter and the religious elite as the true interpreters of the Law of Moses.

Jesus himself quotes from Torah in his response (Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18).  In doing so he takes the Law out of the realm of external achievement and into the realm of attitude and relationships with the dual foci of loving God with all of who we are, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

But what is love?  In today's culture we have tended to confuse "toleration" with "love."  However, if our plumbline for love is divine love we must reclaim a different way of interpreting love.  God's love is completely intolerant of sin because of how it harms those he loves.  He has a settled, constant, unchanging love for us, and he has a settled antipathy to sin precisely because he loves us and desires our wholeness.  And because he both loves us and hates our sin his perfect solution was the cross to which our sins have been nailed.  This is divine love - not a toleration of sin, but a removal of the power of sin to harm us by his great sacrifice.  And because of this we are to love God with all of who we are.

And we are to love our neighbor as ourself.  I'm not too sure about you, but there are days when I don't find myself particularly loveable.  I can tend to trust the voice of the accuser over the voice of the beloved.  If I were to love my neighbor as I love myself I would love very poorly.  But this love is also to flow out of our first love for God and his love for us, for we are to love ourselves as he loves us, and therefore our neighbor likewise.  The Lord will confront us when we love ourselves poorly: "don't you beat up on my beloved like that!" and he will likewise call us to account when we do not love our neighbors for they too are his beloved.

May we rest in the assurance of God's settled affection, may we love him with all of our being, and may we love our ourselves as God loves us, and our neighbors likewise.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Time, Talent, and Treasure
If you missed the video on all that the Lord has done this last year through the time, talent and treasure of his people you can watch it either on the website or here.
I believe the Lord is calling us into an even more radical discipleship both in terms of our talents and our treasure.  He is calling this Body of Christ, called by the name of the Good Shepherd, to reveal his love more profoundly to each other and to the world.  If you have discerned the Lord calling you to participate more fully in the Kingdom work he is doing through his church please either contact Rev'd Sarah or the person listed as the coordinator of the ministry (you can find the current Good Shepherd ministries in the Ministries Booklet linked here
Last week a letter went out with pledge cards for 2012.  If you did not receive it please call the office.  If you have never pledged I pray that you would consider doing so this coming year.  If you have pledged out of whatever is left over I pray that you consider pledging as a percentage of what the Lord has already given you.
Please bring your pledge cards on November 6, All Saints Day
for the Stewardship Ingathering Collection

A Prayer for discernment in the call of the next bishop: Be with us and guide us, Holy Spirit, as we seek your will for the future of our diocese.
