Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and [give back] to God what is God's
Matthew 22:21
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Seeking to entrap Jesus the Pharisees ask a very cunning question: "Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" The particular tax in question is the detested poll tax, paid by Roman coinage stamped with the words: "Tiberius Caesar, Augustus, son of the deified Augustus, chief priest." The tax is not only a constant reminder to the Jews that theirs is a subjugated nation, but also each time a Roman coin is handled it is a reminder that the occupying forces hold the Jewish religion of no account, for Caesar Augustus is considered god, and Tiberius Caesar his chief priest.
Were Jesus to acknowledge the need to pay the tax he would lose the favor of the people, were he to speak against the tax he could be handed over to the authorities as a traitor to Roman rule.
The question Jesus asks of those to whom he shows the coin is extraordinarily clever, for he asks whose "eikon" or image is represented there. To the Jews this word would take them back to the Greek translation of Genesis 1:27: "in the "eikon" image of God he created them; male and female he created them." The coin bears the image of Caesar - men and women bear the image of God.
Therefore, says Jesus, give back to Caesar what belongs to him - the coinage comes from him and should be returned to him, and give back to God what belongs to God - every man and woman owes their existence to God and we are to give back to him what he first gave to us - everything! All of who we are comes to us from the gracious hand of God: our very being, our talents, our treasure, there is nothing that we can claim as our own.
Jesus asks us to give ourselves fully back to God, for his Kingdom work, not to impoverish us but to lavish us with his blessings. May we have willing hearts to give back and to receive from his gracious hand.

WOW! WHAT A WEEKEND!
An amazing turnout for our workday: windows cleaned, dead trees cut down and removed, weeds removed, cobwebs removed, new plants planted, closets cleaned out, furniture moved .... whew! Thanks to all who came out, and especially to Charlotte for organizing it!
I have shared with a couple of people the image that I have for the campus - like a bird that couldn't fly, weighted down by black tar, now cleaned up, fluffing up it's clean feathers with its beak - preening itself - ready to soar!
And in the middle of it all Terri and Gordon were married!

Our Greek Feast was a HUGE success! Thanks to Pat and his amazing crew. Thanks also to Joann and her decorating crew - the Parish Hall looked phenomenal! Thanks to all those who put together trifolds and information packets for their ministries, and for such creative centerpieces for the tables! And, thanks to all those who took tablecloths home to launder! Thanks to Susan and Gordon for sharing so beautifully from their hearts! Here is the movie that we saw (without the music).
