Collect

16 Pentecost

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve"
Collect for 16 Pentecost

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Do we truly believe these words in the collect?  Do we trust that God is straining to hear our prayers?  That his heart is crying out for the intimacy that comes only when we lay our hearts before him?  This is the prayer of quiet, when we still our hearts to sit in silence with the Lord, willing to be completely vulnerable, allowing him to search us and know us - every inch, every memory, every action, every thought.

Or do we rather listen to the father of lies, the one who makes sure our "conscience is afraid," - the one who accuses us: "surely God can't love you ... God certainly can't forgive you that sin ...you are unclean you know ... you could have (should have) done something about that ... why did you allow yourself to be a victim ... you've let God down ...."  Have you believed any of those accusations?  They don't come from God - they come from the accuser of the brethren, from the father of lies.  For God reveals our sins gently not to condemn us but to heal us, not to bind us but to free us.

He freed Saint Paul from the sin of persecuting Christians, from the sin of complicity in the death of Stephen - imagine how crippled Paul's ministry would have been if he had given even a toe-hold to the Accuser "remember Paul, you were a blasphemer, a persecutor, an insolent opponent."  But Paul knows that he has received mercy and moves forward without the baggage of his past: "This one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead."  He knows that his sins, great as they were, are gone.

To believe the lies of the deceiver is to disbelieve the promises of God and to rob us of the power of God to work in our lives: "the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe" Eph 1:19.  The same power that raised Jesus from the dead!

May we spend the time with God in quiet listening rather to the healer's voice, for he will pour upon us the abundance of his mercy and forgive us all those things of which our conscience is afraid and fill us with his power.

"I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.  Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." Saint Paul

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

Historic Chapel Tours, Blessing of the Animals

What an amazing weekend!  The grounds pressure-cleaned by Bob and Bob so that they positively sparkled!  So many people came out to help at the Rummage Sale, welcome people into our parking lot, hand out free water, and show people around our historic chapel.  Great worship yesterday evening and this morning and a sweet Blessing of the Animals with God's critters this afternoon!  God is SO good!
Over $400 in donations from the parking that is earmarked for the Food Bank.  And over $6,000 in fundraising income from the Rummage Sale!
Many people thanked us for offering free parking and for handing out free water, for the way that the rummage sale was organized and priced.  One person came back to the campus to make sure he found someone to thank for the free parking "We've just moved here from up north - I've never known a church do anything like this - thank you!"
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS SUCH A GREAT WEEKEND!  AND TO OUR GOD FOR HIS MANY BLESSINGS!
