15 Pentecost

O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?"
Matthew 21:23
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

In response to the challenge to his authority by the Temple elite Jesus tells the parable of the two sons: the one who says he won't obey his father, and then does by his actions, and the other who tells his father he will be obedient to his wishes but doesn't put his obedience into action.  Of the two the former is the only truly obedient son.

There is an intimate connection between authority and obedience.  If Jesus has ultimate authority over our lives: "all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" Matthew 28:18 then all obedience is owed him.  Not just a little, but all.

As I see it there are at least three barriers to obedience:
  1. We don't fully trust the goodness and the power of the one who is asking for our obedience
  2. We have an elevated estimation of our own capabilities to determine how we should act in all areas of our lives
  3. We don't know what is required of us, we don't know what obedience looks like
The answer to the first is the cross and the empty tomb.  The cross is the place all of our questions about God find their answer - if God chose this radical descent from glory, to humanity, to servanthood, to death on a cross then he has put our good above his own.  The empty tomb reveals the absolute power of this good and loving God over our greatest enemy - death.  We can trust this good and all powerful God.

Culture will seduce us into believing that if it feels good to us it therefore must be good for us, and our reason will play gymnastics to rationalize as good that which our emotions desire.  When we place our emotions and will on the throne of our lives our disobedience to God's will places us outside of his protection and we end up in dead-ends and thickets, or worse.

Obedience to Jesus is not accomplished by going down a check list of do's and don'ts, it requires an ever-deepening relationship with him.  Because when we get to know him we get to know his character, and in knowing his character it becomes ours if we take ourselves off the throne of our lives and place him there which is his rightful place.  And we get to know him through his word and through prayer - and that is a journey, a pilgrimage, a daily, hourly, minute by minute long obedience in the same direction.

It is an obedience perfectly summed up in the words of the prayer found in the pocket of Fr. Mychal, the fire department chaplain who was killed at Ground Zero:
Lord, take me where You want me to go
Let me meet who You want me to meet
Tell me what You want me to say, and
Lord, keep me out of Your way.
May his prayer be ours

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+
