| Collect 12 Pentecost | | Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. You always resist the proud who confide in their own strength ...
you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy
(collect for 12 Pentecost)
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
I am thankful to David for being willing to share his personal story this Sunday about how pride can so easily prevent us from loving our neighbor as ourself. As David said, "love is the Church's standard but love sure is hard."
One of the things that makes love "hard" is our human pride. It is the greatest weapon of the Enemy against our relationship with God, and our relationships with each other. St Augustine wrote that pride "is the love of one's own excellence." It is the temptation that the Enemy used on our first parents, Adam and Eve: "you shall be like God."
None of us are exempt from this temptation to be prideful, preachers and rectors included! It is part of the human condition. Of course just because it is part of our human condition does not mean that we are to give in to it - on the contrary we are to resist the temptation to "think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think" (Romans 12:3), we are rather to "boast in the Lord" (1 Cor 1:31).
Thankfully the Lord helps us in our weakness for he does indeed "always resist the proud who confide in their own strength" and he "never forsakes those who make their boast of his mercy."
May we be a people who learn to make our boast only of his mercy.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,
Rev'd Sarah+

HAPPY LABOR DAY

NEXT SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 We have invited our local "first responders" to join us as our guests of honor at breakfast next Sunday. Our Scouts will be present as an honor guard.
If you know anyone in the Maitland fire department, police, EMT, please encourage them to be our guests that morning as we honor those who are always ready to put their lives on the line for others, as did those in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania ten years ago. Professor Reggie Kidd will be our guest preacher at the 8:00 am and 10:30 am services on that day. Reverend Sarah will be celebrant.
The Office of Evening Prayer will be said on Saturday, September 10 at 5:00 pm. George Madill, Officiant. |
