Dearly Beloved in Christ,
During this year's vestry retreat, under the leadership of Mary Tomlinson, we were challenged to complete the following statement: "The Church of the Good Shepherd exists to ....." By the end of the retreat we were of one mind that "The Church of the Good Shepherd exists to reveal the love of Christ." How do we put feet on that? What does that look like?
In Sunday's reading from Paul's letter to the Romans (12:9-21) we have the answer with a recipe for Christian love - the agape love of God. It is a love that is genuine, sincere, not hypocritical or superficial. It is a discerning love, not mere blind sentimentality, a love that is intolerant of every kind of evil that would damage God's beloved. It is familial love at its most pure, the kind of deep affection that can exist between parents and children and siblings, for in the Body of Christ we are truly brothers and sisters. It strives to always honor and encourage others.
This love bubbles up from the wellspring of the Holy Spirit in enthusiastic service for the Lord. It is patient, resting back in the hope that we have in Christ, able to withstand all aided by faithfulness in prayer. It is generous in sacrificial giving. It is a love that opens itself up to welcome the stranger. Christian love never distances itself from other people's joys and pains, on the contrary Christian love identifies with the other, rejoicing in their joys, and suffering with them in their pains. This love manifests itself in humility and always seeks peace and reconciliation. It does not seek vengeance or retribution on those who have shown themselves to be an enemy, on the contrary it blesses them and provides for their needs.
Ultimately the cross is the perfect image of this love, and it is the place where evil is finally conquered by being swallowed up in love. Here unconditional love is perfectly revealed. A love that is generous, sincere, steadfastly affectionate, humble, compassionate and encouraging; a love that brings harmony and not discord. May we follow the lead of the master and learn to love as he loves.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,
Rev'd Sarah+
