| Collect 9 Pentecost | | Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Discipleship training 101 & 201: What is clean and what is unclean in the Kingdom of God?
|
|
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Throughout Matthew's Gospel we see our Lord training up the disciples in the ways of the Kingdom. He draws clear distinctions between the Pharisaical Jewish traditions and the ways of God. In the Gospel reading on Sunday (Matthew 15:10-28) we see our Lord teaching the disciples both in word and enacted parable about what is considered clean and unclean in the Kingdom of God.
The list of what was considered "unclean" in first century Jewish Palestine was extensive. Included in that list were Gentiles, especially Gentile women, certain foods, and food that was not prepared according to certain standards. Detailed lists had evolved which mandated the only ways in which food could be handled. Failure to adhere to such rules meant that the offenders themselves had become unclean, and numerous rituals would be required to remove the impurity.
Jesus offends the Pharisees and initially confuses his disciples by contradicting these long-held traditions. Nothing that goes in through the mouth can make anyone unclean. However, what comes out of the mouth can completely defile a person because such things come from the fallen heart of man: evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander. There are no external rituals that can cleanse the fallen heart. The only remedy is an internal transformation wrought by the seed of the Word watered by the fresh rain of the Holy Spirit.
The encounter with the Canaanite woman provides a further teaching opportunity in Kingdom of God cleanliness. A Gentile woman, in so many ways unclean in Jewish tradition has the faith to call Jesus both Lord, and Messiah (Son of David) and to trust completely that he can save and heal (have mercy - help me). The disciples' reaction to her request: "send her away." Jesus' reaction to her request an ironic statement to the disciples, just to push the point home, and a good-natured humorous interchange with the woman, followed by this statement: "O woman, great is your faith."
May we have the unshakeable faith of the Canaanite woman, and be made clean by allowing the Word of God to be seeded in our hearts so that they may bring forth the clean fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,
Rev'd Sarah+

Scouts Painting, Playground Clean Up, Blessing of the Backpacks, Ice Cream Social, and Newcomers' gathering - a wonderfully full and blessed weekend!
Work has begun on the Chapel renovation!
The scouts did a wonderful job of painting the old youth room and the nursery (we still need another coat and the woodwork painted - are there any volunteers??!!! Call Dari van Hissenhoven)
Dougie Smith did a phenomenal job of cleaning out old branches and weeds from the playground - all we need now is some mulch, and to cut down a very dead and dangerous tree!
The children brought their backpacks to be blessed at the altar and were given cross zipper pulls to carry with them to school. (Thank you Dari and Brym!)
We all ate way too much of Dede's amazing home made ice cream afterwards in the Parish Hall. Dede gathered prayer requests from the children so that we can partner them with parishioners who will keep them in prayer during the school year. And Jim and Irene Burgess once again opened up their beautiful home with their wonderful gift of hospitality to welcome some of our new members and to provide an opportunity to introduce them to some of our ministry/commission leaders. Thanks to all who brought food, and especially Sallie and Doug Smith for their herculean efforts! WOW! That together with a record attendance at both 8:00 am and 10:30 am services provided for much praise and thanksgiving to our Lord for his provision. Other photos can be found on the website here |

As we continue to pray for all on our Prayer List I was reminded this week of just how important a ministry this is.
