8 Pentecost

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Take heart; it is I.  Do not be afraid." Matthew 14:27

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Having healed and fed the crowd Jesus sends both them and the disciples away.  Finally he can retreat to a quiet place to spend time with his Father.  From before evening to the fourth watch, six hours, he is deep in prayer.

Meanwhile the disciples are weathering one of the violent storms that erupt with some frequency on the Sea of Galilee.  It is dark, the middle of the night, the sea churning, the wind howling and blowing so hard that it sends shards of water into their faces and arms.  They are far from land, and being pushed further and further away by the storm.  Their small boat crests and dips, crests and dips, tossed like toy in the fury of the storm.  If that weren't enough, of a sudden, they see a ghost coming towards them on the water, waves crashing either side of him, but not unbalancing him.  Then, in their abject terror and despair they hear a familiar voice: "Take heart; it is I, do not be afraid."

The One who created the waters and all that live in the waters - the One who made the Sea of Galilee is still master over those waters.

Is your small boat being tossed about right now?  Does the storm outside, or within, seem too strong?  Is the safety of land far distant?  There is One striding across those stormy waters in whose arms is greater safety than the solid land you seek, and he is striding towards you with these words: "take heart; do not be afraid, it is I, the Lord."

He might even call you out of that small boat to walk towards him on the water - keep your eyes fixed on him, he will not let you perish.  And even if you look away for an instant, and start to drown, cry out to him, he will not let the waves overcome you, he will immediately reach out his hand to rescue you.

The One who created the waters, who divided the waters, who walked on the waters, and who stilled the waters has made a promise - I am with you always - to the end of the age.  Look to Him only, take heart, and do not be afraid.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

There are a few items that will be needed for our rearranged and freshly painted children's areas:

If you have any of these items to spare they would be very much appreciated!
