Memorial Day 2011

A Prayer for Heroic Service

O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy.  Grant that we may not rest until all people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines.  This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

A Prayer for those in the Military

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad.  Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence.

1 Peter 3:15-16

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Paul, the master theologian, never missed an opportunity to share his faith whether in a Jewish synagogue in Asia Minor, by a river outside a city in what is now part of Europe, in a Roman prison, or in a marketplace.  In Sunday's reading from the Acts of the Apostles we find him engaging the Athenian non-believers in a discussion about Christ by means of a monument they had erected to an "unknown god."  For Paul there was no group too small or too large, no location too inconsequential or too imposing.  He could not be constrained from sharing the good news of Christ, of proclaiming the hope that was within him.

We likewise, says Peter, are to always be ready to make our defense of the hope that is within us.  This is a continuation of last week's theme where Peter proclaimed that we are a royal priesthood in order that we might proclaim Christ.  "But ... I'm no master theologian like Paul" we think, "I'll leave those discussions to the 'professionals.'"  But Peter isn't asking us to defend particular theories of the Atonement - he is challenging us to make a defense of the hope that is in us - personally.  What is the hope that is within you?

At the end of the preparation for Confirmation classes the group shared their spiritual autobiographies.  It was a rich time of encountering Christ in the lives of others.  If you came to believe in Christ later in life could you testify as to how that relationship has changed your life?  If you have believed in Christ from as far back as you can remember would you be able to share what that journey together with Jesus has been like?  That is the "defense" that Peter challenges each one of us to be able to make.  Because of Christ what is the hope that is within us?  May we always be ready and willing to share that hope and to do so gently and reverently.

In His Peace, Grace, and Love,
Rev'd Sarah+

PS Many thanks to The Reverend Dr. Dawn McDonald for taking services for me today while I am on vacation.

The Feast of the Ascension
Ascension

This Thursday, June 2nd, is one of the principal feast days in the Christian calendar - the Ascension of our Lord.  For forty days after his resurrection our Lord appeared to his disciples, and revealed to them those things that they could  not understand until after his death and resurrection.  One might think that they would be grief struck at his leaving them once again, and yet there is no record of this in any of the Gospel accounts.  For the Lord has left them with a two-fold promise: he will send them the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to be with them always, indeed unless he returns to the Father the Holy Spirit will not come, and he promises them that he will return at the end of the age.  These promises are for us also.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Collect for The Ascension
