| This Week's Collect Easter Sunday | |
Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is Risen Indeed. Alleluia!"

Dearly Beloved in Christ,
In all four Gospels it is the women who are the first to find the tomb empty, and to receive the message that Jesus has been raised from the dead. In all except Matthew's Gospel the disciples do not believe the women's witness: "they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense." Luke 24:11. And they are rebuked by the Lord for their unbelief: "He rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen." Mark 16:14
The empty tomb requires a risen Lord: "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins." 1 Cor 15:17. The tomb is empty not because the Romans, or the Jews, or the disciples took the body, nor because Jesus had merely swooned and had resuscitated. The tomb is empty because the supernatural power of God has intervened in the realm of nature and human life.
Paul prays that his fellow Christians may know "what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead." Ephesians 1:19-20. The paradox is that for this power to be at work in and through us we must be completely surrendered - weak: "my power is made perfect in weakness" 2 Cor 12:9.
Neither the fact of the empty tomb nor the women's witness sway the disciples. It is their personal encounter with the risen Lord that completely changes frightened fishermen into valiant warriors, immovable in their faith, fearless in the face of death, for if the Lord is risen then the cross does not mean defeat but victory, not weakness but the power of God. Have we encountered this risen Lord or are we still half-believing the women's witness is nonsense? To encounter this risen Lord means to trust that the same power that raised him from the dead is at work in the world today.
May we encounter this risen Lord, and trust him with our weakness so that his power may work in and through us.
In His Peace, Grace, and Love, Rev'd Sarah+
