This Week's Collect
The Fifth Sunday in Lent

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."

John 11:21 and 32

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Both Martha and Mary knew that had their Lord returned with the messengers whom they had sent with the news that their brother was ill, he would not have died.  They were absolutely convinced that Jesus would have healed him.  But Jesus had not returned with the messengers.  In fact he had tarried two days after receiving the news of Lazarus' illness guaranteeing that when he did arrive decomposition had already set in: "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days."

Why did the One who healed the man born blind not rush back to heal Lazarus, and prevent the sisters' anguish at their brother's death? Certainly not because their Lord didn't care.  On seeing their grief, and the grief of those with them, Jesus' compassionate heart breaks and he weeps.

But God's perspective is not our perspective "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Is 55:8-9)  God's perspective is viewed from outside our time, from eternity.  And his greatest desire is for us to be with him eternally, and for this we must believe the Son.

The death of Lazarus is "So that the Son of God may be glorified through it ... so that you may believe."  The raising of Lazarus is the pivotal event in galvanizing the Jewish authorities to actively seek Jesus' death.  It is also the sign through which many come to believe in him and in what he says "I am the resurrection and the life - those who believe in me, even though they die will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die - do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26)

God desires for us to believe, to trust completely in his ways, his timing, his purposes, even when he seems to tarry, perhaps especially when he seems to tarry, for that is when we we must dig deep into our faith roots and can answer with Martha "yes, Lord, I believe."

In His Peace, Grace, and Love,
Rev'd Sarah+
