Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away! Happy are they to whom the LORD imputes no guilt, and in whose spirit there is no guile! Psalm 32:1-2

Dearly Beloved in Christ, During this season of Lent the Sunday Scripture readings provide an overview of salvation history - of God's mission of love to save his people, to bring them back to him.
On Ash Wednesday we were reminded that "we are but dust and to dust we shall return." It was God who created "adam" (Hebrew for mankind) out of "adamah" (Hebrew for ground). Unique among God's creation he breathed his life into us, creating us in his image. To paraphrase Julian of Norwich, we were created by Love, in Love, for Love. And we were given free will to choose to love in return or not, to choose to place ourselves completely in his care, or to try and be rulers of our own lives.
The temptations with which the Deceiver ensnared our first parents: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life are the same temptations with which he continues to attempt to draw us away from God, with the overarching theme that we should be able to do what seems "good" to us. Jesus is tempted in exactly the same way after fasting 40 days in the wilderness, but he refuses to succumb to what might seem "good" to him and rebuffs the Enemy by his complete submission to God's will, trusting completely in the goodness and love of the Father.
In so doing he remained the only man born of woman to be without sin. As Paul says he is the second, and true Adam, who by taking our sins to the cross with him overcomes both sin and death for us who would receive the gift.
In His Peace, Grace, and Love, Rev'd Sarah+

THE FORTY DAYS OF LENT
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent:
- by self-examination and repentance:
- Particularly during this season Christians have found it helpful to engage in a spiritual inventory; an "examen of conscience," using as a yardstick one or more of the following: The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17 and BCP 350), the Seven "Deadly" Sins (link), The Great Litany (BCP 148), The Litany of Penitence (BCP 267), An Exhortation (BCP 316). An Order for the Examen can be found here.
- The Church continues to offer the sacrament of the Reconciliation of a Penitent (BCP 447-452). This rite is available throughout the year, but is particularly appropriate during this season of self-examination and repentance. It is a sacrament through which the penitent, who continues to doubt that they can be forgiven, receives the assurance of God's forgiveness and restoration to perfect peace. The well-known adage concerning this sacrament is "all may, some should, none must." Reverend Sarah will be available every Wednesday between 2:00 and 4:00 pm in the Chapel for the Reconciliation of a Penitent. Please call the office or email Rev'd Sarah if you would like to schedule an appointment. ("The secrecy of a confession is morally absolute for the confessor, and must under no circumstances be broken." BCP 446)
- by prayer, fasting, and self-denial
- Prayer: The discipline of daily setting aside a time to be in quiet personal conversation with our heavenly Father is always appropriate. This is a perfect time to start this discipline if it is not yet a part of the rhythm of your life. The Anglican practice of reciting the Daily Office of Morning Prayer is a good place to start if you are unused to this discipline. Although designed to be said in community it can also appropriately be said privately. Here is a site that easily walks you through Morning Prayer: Mission St Clare - Click the button that says "Click for Today's Prayer Service." Also, on Saturday, March 19 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm Joy Sutton will be teaching a class on prayer for the Confirmation/Reception/Reaffirmation class. You are invited to come to this class even if you are not planning on being confirmed or received.
- Fasting and Self-Denial: Thanks to Dean Rick Lobs "Ruminations" for the following by St. John Chrysostom, (347 AD-407AD) - "Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful. Let the ear fast, by not listening to evil talk and gossip. Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers? May He who came to the world to save sinners, strengthen us to complete the fast with humility! Have mercy on us and save us."
- by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.
- John Wesley, an Anglican priest and founder of the Methodist movement, famously said: "Read (the Bible) and pray daily. It is your life, without it you will be a trifler all your days." To be able to hear God's voice in our prayer time we must familiarize ourselves with his words to us in Scripture. Instead of reading for information we must train ourselves to read devotionally. Lectio Divina is a way of reading the Bible devotionally - here is a brief overview.
- There are also still some Lenten Devotional Booklets published by the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund available in the Chapel and the Church.

MAITLAND ARTS FESTIVAL
APRIL 15, 16, and 17
We will once again open our car park for free parking and we will give away free water. We will have tours of our historic chapel. We will offer an inexpensive lunch menu. The cooking will be done on outside grills and tables set up under canopies by the Lake Lilly walk through. This is a wonderful opportunity to greet the community, to show them our wonderful Good Shepherd hospitality, and extend an invitation to participate in our Palm Sunday services if they don't have a church home!
We need "all hands on deck!" If you could help for 1/2 hour or an hour either with giving away the bottles or "manning" the parking lot entrance, directing people where to go, or being a "docent" for the chapel tours please contact either Susan van Bernum, who is chairing this committee, or Jim and Dianna Bivins who co-chair the Newcomers/Evangelism Commission.
Canopies are needed - if you have one that you could lend us please contact either Susan or Jim or Dianna.
Thank you!
