There is joy and blessedness in being permitted to witness in an age of doubt and unbelief to that precious faith committed unto us.
The Rt Rev'd H.B. Whipple, Founder of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Maitland, Florida, 1881

How do we measure up?
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
Yesterday I shared a few of culture's standards by which a man is measured (according to an article in the Raleigh North Carolina News and Observer).  These included: the ability to make and conserve money; the cost, style, and age of one's car; a man's strength, size, and how much hair he has; the job he holds; his aggressiveness and reliability.

Jesus' list of how we measure up according to God's standards is so very different: Blessed are the poor in spirit; blessed are those who mourn; blessed are the meek; blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness; blessed are the merciful; blessed are the pure in heart; blessed are the peacemakers.

Whereas culture measures us by the externals, God measures us first and foremost by the internals.  The first three of the Beatitudes describe people who have come to the end of their own resources, and consequently can acknowledge their complete dependence on the only One who can provide.  In the words of the hymn:
Nothing in my hand I bring
Simply to thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to thee for dress;
Helpless, look to thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die.

If the first three Beatitudes are about letting go of all false sense of self-sufficiency and a complete reliance on God alone, then the next four Beatitudes are about how we relate to the world because of our reliance on God and not ourselves, and the last two are the possible reactions of the world to our changed focus and lifestyle.

May we refuse to be complicit with the way the world measures us.  May we rather come to the realization that self-reliance is ultimately illusory - there is only One in whom we may place our confidence, and in doing so may we extend His Kingdom by living accordingly.

In His Peace, Grace, and Love,
Rev'd Sarah+

The Right Reverend John W. Howe, Third Bishop of the Diocese of Central Florida, announced his retirement at last weekend's Diocesan Convention
Bsp HoweBishop Howe announced his intention to retire on April 21, 2012 and has called for the election of the Fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Central Florida.
While I find myself personally grieving this news because of the relationship of bishop to priest that has sustained me through call, ordination, and ministry,  I am at the same time so very thankful to the Lord for the place to which he has brought us as a diocese under +John Howe's leadership.  I am also thankful for the people the Lord has placed in leadership positions within the diocese for "such a time as this."
Many of my fellow clergy have expressed the same sense of peace as I have experienced, and an abiding sense of the Lord's guiding hand as we enter into this season of discernment for our next bishop.
The delegates to convention will serve as the search and nominating body with the Standing Committee coordinating the process.  A website is already up and running with complete information on the process.  It includes an interactive blog where questions can be openly posed and answered; the Bishop's address from Convention; the address by the Chair of the Standing Committee, The Rev'd Dr. Al Jenkins; and a list of areas where volunteers are needed as the process moves forward.   Please follow this link for more information.  This website can also be accessed through the Good Shepherd website under the "Parish News" tab.

A Prayer to Guide our Search
Be with us and guide us, Holy Spirit of God, as we seek your will for the future of our Diocese.  Help us to discern the needs and hopes of your people in Central Florida, so that our search for a Bishop may proceed with clear vision and joyful obedience. We pray through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

A Prayer for Guidance
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Knowing Jesus through the Old Testament

This coming Sunday, February 6, Rev'd Sarah will begin a five-week teaching series entitled "Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament" based largely on a book of the same name by Christopher J.H. Wright.

We can tend to think that God's mission of rescue begins with the Incarnation and therefore with the New Testament texts.  However, God's story encompasses the entire canon of Old and New Testaments, and we cannot therefore fully know Jesus without knowing his story.

Jesus himself says this: "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me." (John 5:39) and on the road to Emmaus he says this to the despondent disciples: "'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!  Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?'  And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself."  (Luke 24:25-27)

This teaching series will continue through the last Sunday of the Epiphany season.  During Lent Jim Sutton will lead us as we view and discuss the verbatim DVD presentation of The Gospel of John.
