The Grand Vision

Grand Vision in Action

The Grand Vision continues to inspire
change in northwest lower Michigan.

Here's what's been happening lately.

Energy Network

It's been about a year since The Grand Vision Energy Network launched a sub-committee focused on energy efficiency. That group wanted to find a way to not only continue to educate the public, but also reach decision makers in the business community to help identify tangible next steps toward implementing broader energy efficiency programs and financing measures.

That's the goal of the June 14 Energy Efficiency and Local Economic Opportunity Community Leadership Summit, hosted by the Michigan Land Use Institute (MLUI) at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City.

"We're hoping that we can do some broad education and also look at some new possibilities and opportunities that will help us build upon the good work already underway here in our region," said Brian Beauchamp, MLUI Energy Program Director and a member of The Grand Vision Energy Network.

The findings of a new report titled Energy Efficiency and Local Economic Opportunity will be released at the Summit. MLUI and SEEDS did the research to look at how investing in energy efficiency can benefit the local economy in the region by saving money and creating jobs.

"The energy saving investments in homes or businesses that we're talking about creates jobs, and beyond just creating jobs they also save money that would otherwise leave the community," said Beauchamp.

The Summit will include a panel discussion of ways to get more local financing options on the table for energy efficiency projects. Also, keynote speaker, Peter Garforth, will share his global experience working in communities around the world on how deep energy saving programs can help homeowners and businesses alike.

New Website Launched.

The second annual Placemaking Summit for Northern Michigan, held May 21 in both Traverse City and Petoskey, attracted more than 300 people. The event highlighted state and national experts, provided local examples of best practices, and introduced the newly-created Northern Michigan Community Placemaking Guidebook.

The Summit also included an overview of a new website highlighting placemaking efforts in northern Michigan. That website is now active. CreateMiPlace.org is designed to give communities a better understanding of what placemaking is and how it can be implemented.

CreateMiPlace.org will give communities a quick and easy way to see placemaking stories from communities around the region. Communities will also be able to post stories and information about their placemaking efforts and upload placemaking videos to the website.
