| Fiber Increases Life Span by dr. pina loGiudice and dr. peter bongiorno
Dietary fiber is well known as something to 'keep us regular', or as Great Uncle Joe used to say: 'it helps keep the pipes moving.'
Well, now we know it does even more. According to a landmark study just published in the Archives of Internal medicine, it seems fiber intake will help you live longer. Dietary fiber intake is associated with a significantly lowered risk of total death in both women and men. They looked at 400,000 people from the ages of 50 to 70 and found that men who ate 29 grams of fiber, and women who eat about 26 grams of fiber were 22 per cent less likely to die in nine years and they had less cardiovascular, lung and respiratory disease, or infectious disease problems.
The only other proven-by-research ways to extend life? - exercise, lowering caloric intake, and not smoking.

| QUESTION: "isn't agave healthy?" |
| |
Thank you for the question: Agave is related to the yucca plant and comes chiefly from Mexico and South America. It has been hailed as a healthful because agave tastes sweet, but does not raise blood sugar. This leads many people to think agave is safe for diabetics and those who want to watch their blood sugar.
The fact is that while agave is low in glucose, and therefore does not raise blood glucose levels, it is very high (about 80%) in fructose.
The problem with this is that while fructose levels in the blood may not be measured by the standard blood glucose test, fructose is more damaging to body tissues, and is therefore even more of a problem than glucose.
The other issue is that our SAD (standard American diet) leaves us always looking for sweet tastes - which agave can satisfy. What may be more healthful is to start cultivating tastes for bitter: for example, it might be better to slowly cut the sugar in your tea by half every week, until there is none left. This way, you can start to enjoy the bitter and complex tastes found in quality tea.
thank you for the question. If you have a question you would like answered, write us.
