research | study shows toxic chemicals in pregnant women's bodies |
a study of 268 pregnant women found rocket fuel, flame retardant chemicals and cancer causing carcinogens in urine and blood of pregnant women. These substances are known to be able to reach the fetus and are also found in the umbilical cord. Military work, plastics, non-stick pans, inorganic grain fed meat, and car exhaust are some of the many common sources of these chemicals. PATIENT QUESTION:
"is coffee bad for me?: |

| Great question - many people like a cup of joe, especially in the AM to get you going.
The truth is, it really depends on you. Studies from Japan support the use of coffee to protect against liver and bile tract cancer. Other studies suggests benefit to prevent diabetes. So for many people, it may be a good thing.
What we tell our patients is: if you are a very anxious person, have insomnia, or arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) this is probably not the beverage for you.
Blood type research suggests type A and AB populations may benefit from some coffee, while type O may do best with green tea.
thank you for the question. If you have a question you would like answered, write us.

| original article: natural medicine for menopause | Actually, Menopause Is Not A Disease by dr. pina loGiudice and dr. peter bongiorno
Contrary to popular conventional wisdom menopause is not a disease. Oftentimes, during times of transition, our bodies will speak to us with sometimes very obvious symptoms to tell us when certain aspects are out of balance. If we look at it simply as a disease with symptoms to suppress, we will miss what our body is saying, and even suppress important signs and symptoms that can help us truly stay balanced.
Menopause is certainly a time of change. For most women this includes hormonal changes. But there are subtle digestive, psychological and spiritual components, as well as issues with sleep, inflammation and digestion. The symptoms associated with menopause vary from woman to woman. Symptoms include day hot flashes, nighttime hot flashes and sweating, insomnia, as well as fatigue and muscle weakness. Emotional symptoms can include anxiety, depression, irritability - or even all three. When we listen to these symptoms carefully, usually we can figure out what may be out of balance for each individual woman.
Because this is a full-body and mind issue, naturopathic medicine and acupuncture is well-equipped to help each woman where to focus. Oftentimes, a protocol which includes hormonal balance, herbal formulas, nutrients, exercise, dietary changes and breathing/relaxation work can be very helpful. We find that women typically need different treatments. Helpful supplements we have found useful include: black cohosh, st. john's wort, soy, genistein, flax, 'adrenal support', magnesium, chaste berry, and mixed tocopherols. Sometimes, a few different ones need to be tried before finding the one that is best for each individual woman.
Occasionally, natural hormonal replacement can help if other more gentle natural options are not effective. As naturopathic physicians, we prefer to use natural hormones as a last resort - although these are natural, they can theoretically push certain hormonal pathways which can lead to encouraging hormonally related cancers. Before starting hormonal therapies, it is important to run the proper blood and saliva testing to ensure the patient is receiving optimal physiologic amount, and not too much for her body.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, there are thousands' year old formulas that can also help by addressing multiple symptoms and underlying issues. A formula called Da Bu Yin addresses nourishing the Yin energy, which is an important female energy, useful to keep energy up, and in balance. Acupuncture is also supportive to nourish deficient kidney yin, which sometimes manifests as sweating, night sweats, insomnia, and a feeling of upper body heat.
Although there is no one quick fix to menopausal symptoms, there are a number of naturopathic and acupuncture treatments that can help. (pictured: black cohosh)
