Welcome to November! We're thrilled to welcome so many new families to Tidy Tushees and we're so excited to now be offering soft, healthy diapers to families from Vernon to Penticton - you've been asking since we opened and we now feel that we have the structure in place to expand our services while maintaining our commitment to exceptional customer service. We hope you'll help spread the word! We're also really honoured to have many families "coming back" with the birth of their second and in some cases third child! That tells us we're doing something right!
We've taken a hard look at our product lines over the last few months and while we are amazed by the vast number of "green" products available to families, we're narrowing our focus back to our area of expertise - diapers and diapering accessories. We're discontinuing our line of Disposable Diapers and Wipes (because we are after all, committed to reusable products), many of our skin care products and some of our other product lines. We'll be focusing on bringing in MORE diapers and diaper accessories that are made in North America! So now is your chance to take advantage of some great clearance sales and watch for new products to be coming online soon! Don't fear, we'll continue to point you in the right direction to find all of the great green and natural parenting options that are out there! We've been having a lot of requests for our Cloth 101 Workshops which are designed to give parents a clear, easy to understand overview of cloth diapering. These workshops are FREE and products are not sold. These are informational sessions only. Did you know we also offer more intimate Diaper Parties? Gather a couple of friends and we'll stop by to show you all the great products on the market! Our next workshop is November 14 at Maternity Care Westside. Details on our Facebook Page! We'll be attending a number of "shows" in the next two months, so mark your calendars (we usually have great deals at these events)! November 20 @ Westbank Lions Community Hall 10-4 November 27 @ Winfield Memorial Hall 10-4 December 4 @ Rutland Centennial Hall 10-4 These shows have a variety of vendors of great products from beauty and personal care, home decor, jewelery, fashion, crafting and so much more - ONE STOP SHOPPING while supporting local Work-at-Home-Moms!
Your questions and comments are always welcome and appreciated, so do get in touch!
Don't forget to visit us on our Facebook page - we're always running contests, sales news and discussions! Not to mention customer classifieds! Happy Diapering! Kelly
PS - we've had a number of clients who have been using ECOS Laundry Detergent from Costco to launder their diaper covers. This laundry detergent appears to be leaving a residue that hinders absorbency. We recommend that you do NOT use this product to launder your diaper covers. Please see the following link from Bummis with regard to recommended detergents. Unfortunately, the manufacturer warranty is quite limited and covers will not be replaced if there is a residue issue.

Washing Diapers - not as hard as it looks!
The question we are asked the most is HOW to wash cloth diapers. Unfortunately, it is not a simple answer of one system working for everyone, after all there are:
- Different diapers
- Different washing machines
- Different water types
and the multitude of combinations that can arise from these factors can mean that what is recommended for one family may not work for the next. However, for the majority of reusable diaper users, the following formula will work well and if it doesn't...it's relatively easy to tweak the system to work for you. This method is recommended for families using High Efficiency Machines (after all, that is what the majority of consumers now have and they are the HARDEST to use with cloth diapers). Please note that most of these suggestions are based on the recommendations of Bummis with a bit of tweaking by us!
ALWAYS check your manufacturers instructions prior to laundering as their warranty may be voided if their processes are not followed!
Set your machine to the maximum water level. If you're unsure about how to do this, call your manufacturer and ask! If it is still impossible, use the wet towel trick! Reduce the number of diapers per load and add a wet towel or two to trick the machine into adding more water.
What To Do With Dirty Diapers Remove diaper and diaper cover from baby. Flush away flushable liner or shake off excess poop into the toilet. If your baby is exclusively breastfed, there is no need to shake excess poop into the toilet as it will wash out easily. Unfold your diapers to ensure thorough cleaning and remove liners or inserts. Secure velcro type tabs by sticking them to the fold back tabs (on the inside back of the diaper cover or diaper). Put wet or soiled diapers in a pail or a hanging diaper bag. Dirty diaper covers can be stored with your dirty diapers (never soak them!). Wash every 2-3 days. Polyester diaper covers can be washed with your diapers; nylon and wool diaper covers should be washed separately.
Washing Diapers First run a WARM pre-wash (or a short cycle with no detergent). Some manufacturers recommend a cold water pre-wash, but we find warm will help reduce staining!
Then do a regular wash in hot water (60C/140F max) Do not use a sanitize cycle on any products with velcro type closures or elastic. See detergent information below please!
Rinse diapers in lots of water to avoid build-up of detergent, bacteria and urine.
Dry in the dryer or outside on a clothesline (check the label of your product, as some products should only be hung to dry). Sunlight is a natural brightener and disinfectant!
Once washed, your diapers should not smell like urine or detergent! If they do, chances are you have a residue problem. Details on dealing with residue are available on our website under RESOURCES.
DetergentWe recommend using a zero residue detergent! If you have a top loader, you can use the full recommended amount of a zero residue detergent. If you have a front loader or HE machine, stick to the lower end of the recommended amount of detergent. If you are using anything other than a zero residue detergent, use maximum half of what the detergent package tells you to use and one quarter of the recommended amount if you have a front loader or HE machine. Choose a detergent that does not contain any of the following additives, as they can create residue problems. Detergent residue will lead to leaking, absorbency issues and stinky covers. Avoid detergents that contain Fabric softeners, Natural oils, Perfumes, Dyes, UV brighteners, Stain guard ingredients .
You can check the suitability of your detergent with the Detergent Determinatorr! A fabulous resource by the Real Diaper Association.
Please be cautious about using vinegar and/or baking soda, bleach or peroxide, as they can together or individually cause problems with some diapering products. We recommend that you do not use any of these unless specifically suggested by the manufacturer of your diaper or diaper cover.A bleach alternative can be used on an occasional basis for stain removal. It should contain no ingredients beyond sodium carbonate or sodium percarbonate.Should this basic system not work for you, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will help you develop a system that works!
We do not charge for phone, email or in-home consultations!
