Tidy Tushees Times
June 2010
Welcome to June!
Ahh, the warmth of the sun is making an appearance!

Many families are making their summer plans including traveling and camping. Traveling and camping does not mean you have to give up on your cloth diapering routine! Simply plan to take a bag of clean diapers (you'd have to pack sposies anyway) and a couple of waterproof bags or pail liners - our service customers are welcome to request an additional delivery bag for this purpose along with some laundry detergent and washing instructions!

Many of our customers choose to take their diaper pail with them, however a Rubbermaid tote with a secure lid will also work.

Most people traveling with small children end up doing laundry at some point anyway - so adding a load of diapers to the mix really isn't inconvenient! It will save you money and keep baby's tushee happy.

For additional tips on traveling with cloth diapers, feel free to send us an email or visit the discussion section of our Facebook Group!

Hybrid Diapers
Lately we've received a number of questions about Hybrid Diapers - so here are some answers!

What are Hybrid Diapers?
Generally speaking Hybrid Diapers have a reusable outer shell or cover and a disposable insert or liner.

Are Hybrid Diapers Easy to Use?
At first glance, Hybrid Diapers may appear to be the ideal solution for families wanting the "convenience" of a disposable and the eco-friendly appeal of reusable diapers. Upon further examination (and use), they are not much different than using disposables or cloth. Bear in mind that if you choose a brand that requires you to flush the liners when they're dirty, you must usually tear them open to allow them to flush, or use some type of stick to break up the flushable part to prevent clogs (if you're looking to reduce the "gross factor" of diapering, this is not it). Many parents report clogged toilets if they don't dispose of the liners per instructions. Some cities are even finding major issues with clogging of sewage lines and treatment facilities as a result of these liners (when saturated, they swell to the size of soccer balls and the sticky residue clog lines). If you dispose of the liners in the trash, they are contributing to the landfill issues in the same way a disposable diaper does - after all, nothing truly decomposes in a landfill!

How do Hybrid Diapers compare in cost?
Without a doubt, Hybrid Diapers are the most expensive diapering option. You'll need to buy the diaper covers in a few different sizes, plus you'll have to keep a stock of the liners for reloading. Three covers in each of three sizes might cost about $150. Babies use 5,000 diapers or more in their first 2.5 years, and liners for that time-frame will cost around $2,500.

Do Hybrid Diapers Work?
Many parents say they're as good as other diapers when properly fitted and changed often . The liners generally contain an absorbent gel, just like what's in disposable diapers.

What is their Environmental Impact?
The idea of flushing the diaper liners instead of adding them to a landfill is great. Flushing uses more water, though, unless you wait until someone else has used the restroom before flushing the liner. Check to ensure that the liners are made of unbleached wood pulp to lessen the amount of bleach and dioxins going into the environment (and being left on the liners which touch your baby's skin). The diaper covers will need to be washed so you'll use energy and water there. If you flush the dirty diaper liners instead of throwing them away, you'll keep more human waste out of landfills.

Pros
Hybrid diapers cut way down on the amount of plastic you're sending to a landfill, since the outer waterproof layer is re-usable. Some parents prefer the ability to flush messy diaper liners rather than leaving a stinky diaper in a trash can.

Cons
Diaper liners create environmental impacts from manufacturing as they use many of the same resources and processes as disposable diapers. If you throw away the liners, you're still adding to the landfill, though without the plastics this creates less waste. If you flush the liners, you're using more water. Some parents worry over composting the wet liners because of the absorbent gel (the same gel that is contained in disposable diapers and which is banned in  women's tampons as it causes toxic shock syndrome).  The liners require more handling to flush properly, including tearing them and possibly having a special stick with which to break up the liners in the toilet. They are not suitable for septic systems. They are very expensive in comparison to reusable diaper and traditional disposable diapers.
