Greetings!

We are standing in solidarity with all those who are working for equality in dignity in the world!

The Occupy Wall Street movement demonstrates the urgent need for people to work as a global community to create economic, social, and political systems that advance equal dignity. As a community, Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies (HumanDHS) celebrates these signs of courageous collaborative action!Globe

We are pleased to share our latest HumanDHS news and warmly invite you to our upcoming workshop in New York!

We are looking forward to welcoming many of you to this year's Workshop in New York!

More than ever before, this workshop is being organized and led by a remarkable group of network members. We are particularly delighted to welcome Tonya Hammer as our conference coordinator! Evelin Lindner says, "Tonya's dedication, leadership, and compassionate way of working with others is an inspiration to all of us!"

In addition to stimulating roundtable discussions, this year's workshop will feature a special session on how to develop introductory videos for the World Dignity University Initiative. The Don Klein Memorial Lecture will be given by Michael Britton, who recently represented HumanDHS at the Rhodes Forum in Greece.

We are also pleased to announce that the 2011 HumanDHS Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to economic and political sociologist and activist S. Mike Miller, and in memory of legendary psychiatrist and social activist Jean Baker Miller

Everyone is invited to join us for our Public Event, Thursday, December 8th, 5:30-8:00 PM, in Columbia University's Grace Dodge Hall, Room 179. 17th Annual HumanDHS Conference
in Dunedin, New Zealand!

Enlarging the Boundaries of Compassion

University of Otago

Dunedin, New Zealand

Aug. 29-Sept. 1, 2011

We will never forget our 17th Annual HumanDHS Conference in beautiful Dunedin, New Zealand!

Dr. Huata Holmes, a representative of the local Maori Ngai Tahu Tribe, began the conference with an inspirational Mihi Whakatau welcome.

The program continued with thought-provoking discussions and presentations, including Dan Baron sharing his arts-based pedagogical work in the Amazonian North of Brazil, Carmen Hetarak and Michelle Brenner modeling an appreciative approach to understanding the history and experience of the indigenous Maori people, and Linda Hartling describing the impact of humiliation on creativity. In addition, participants led discussions on education, activism, and other approaches that advance human dignity, conflict resolution, and peace.

Prior to the conference, HumanDHS Founding President Evelin Lindner was a special guest on Sunday Morning, a popular show on Radio New Zealand that was broadcast throughout the country.

We are particularly grateful to Brian Ward, Uli Spalthoff, and Kevin Clements, the director of the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, for their efforts on behalf the network. We were delighted to honor each of them with a 2011 HumanDHS Beacon of Dignity Award.

More than anything else, this conference reminded us how important it is to keep enlarging our boundaries of compassion at home and around the world!
