Eyes on the Brain
|
Neurologist Sue Barry discusses vision and the brain. Her book is now available as an audiobook.
In her most recent blog post, Dr. Barry discusses double vision in the elderly. Do you or a loved one have double vision? If so, we can help! Call us today at 301-951-0320 or use our handy "Request an Appointment" online form.
When double vision occurs late, after many years of normal binocular vision, sometimes prism glasses are all it takes to make a huge difference in a person's visual world.

Visual Skills Development
Did you know that at birth, your baby sees only about 20/400? That's like looking at the big E on the eye chart in our office. He also has undeveloped color vision and eye movements-- but these mature quickly! Learn about how you can help your child's visual development here. |
Why Not Buy Glasses Online? A lot of people ask us for advice on where to buy their glasses, since we don't sell glasses at our office. I always tell people to consider that value in a pair of glasses doesn't always mean cheap.
Generally, when it comes to glasses, we get what we pay for. Too many times, we have to send patients to get their glasses remade because the prescription was not filled correctly. Folks have asked us about buying glasses online, like they might do for their contact lenses.
Consider this: your glasses have to be custom made to work properly. The distance between the lens centers has to be made specifically to the distance between your eyes. The frames have to be centered properly around your eyes. And the lenses have to be made according to the power prescribed by your doctor to give you the most comfortable vision. A recent study showed that nearly half of all prescription glasses ordered online were made incorrectly.
When you consider that poorly made glasses have visual consequences (headaches, blurred vision, double vision)--- which you're trying to get rid of in vision therapy-- cheap no longer has value. Read more HERE

Nearsightedness Rising Changes in lifestyle, including more time spent reading and studying, and less time spent outdoors, is leading to an increase in nearsightedness (myopia).
While the linked article is a study performed in Asia, similar trends have been seen here in the United States. So when you're done reading this email, turn off your computer and head outside!

Spelling Difficulties Might Be a Visual Problem The most common visual problems that affect spelling are eye teaming disorders, such as Convergence Insufficiency or tracking problems. Other common visual sources of spelling challenges come from visual-perceptual difficulties, such as trouble understanding right and left ("laterality and directionality"), and poor visual memory. Fortunately, the clinical staff at the VCDC is expert at treating both eye movement disorders and visual-perceptual disorders. For more symptoms that might be caused by a visual problem, click here. |
Help Us Spread the Word About Vision and Learning! The College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) is helping to educate the public about the link between vision and learning. At the VCDC, we are doing the same- Dr. Green and Dr. Zeller are available for free lectures at schools, PTA meetings, and other venues to spread the word about the link between vision and learning. If you have a group who would benefit from a presentation, please email Canden@VisionTherapyDC.com to arrange the time and date!
