What is your "Regular Eye Exam" Really Testing?

Sue Barry, Ph.D
Drs. Green and Zeller at the VCDC prescribe glasses differently from how you may have experienced at other eye doctors' offices. Our philosophy is based on a whole-person approach to prescribing, taking into account how the person uses his or her eyes, uses the lenses, and moves the body while wearing the lenses.

iPad Aids Vision Development

Technology can be marvelous! There have been many articles about the therapeutic use of the iPad (New York Times) for physical therapy, occupational therapy and brain injury recovery. Specific sites list all sorts of apps for children with autism, and for special needs of all sorts. The National Association for Child Development has an app list, and moms are developing their own!

Recently researchers from the University of Kansas used the iPad to help children with cortical visual impairment (a type of near-blindness in which the brain maturation for vision is delayed). Their next move is to continue research with NIH funding. Read more HERE.

October 2011
Greetings!

School is in session, and many children with visual problems are starting to show their fatigue and frustration. As children advance in school and the workload increases, they may no longer be able to compensate for previously undetected vision problems.
  • Does your child come home from school exhausted, despite eating well and getting sufficient sleep?
  • Does she have trouble paying attention in class?
  • Does he complain that his eyes are tired or hurt by the end of the day?
  • Does she fall asleep or get very tired while reading?
  • Does he avoid reading or other close work?

3D Technology in the Classroom
red blue glasses Boosting Test Scores in 3D

A recent study in the UK found that children were more engaged in their lessons and fared better on tests when teachers used 3D projectors in their classrooms. Overall test scores were boosted by 17%. But once 3D technology becomes commonplace, will children continue to find it so engaging?

By some estimates, up to 25% of children won't be able to appreciate 3D displays, or will actually experience discomfort while viewing 3D. While this can be unpleasant for the child, it can be a useful tool for uncovering vision problems sooner. See the American Optometric Association's report HERE.
