August is National Children's Vision and Learning Month

jillians story

  • One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

  • It is estimated that over 60% of problem learners have undiagnosed vision problems.

  • The majority of the vision problems that interfere with reading and learning are very treatable.

Robin Benoit, author of Jillian's Story: How Vision Therapy Changed My Daughter's Life has joined the College of Optometrists in Vision Development this year to help spread the word about the critical link between vision and learning.

Jillian had been diagnosed with amblyopia (lazy eye) and was struggling with school. The results from vision therapy made it possible for her to learn and do many things she had never done before. Mrs. Benoit's message is: "Parents need to trust their own instincts and understand the difference between a vision screening at school or a pediatrician's office and a comprehensive vision exam."

Robin & Jillian will be interviewed live, on-line, on Thursday, Aug. 25th at 9 pm, eastern, to share their story. To register for this free event, go to: www.joinwebinar.com and enter the meeting ID number which is 917-050-066, your email address, etc. Just follow the instructions from there. Seating is limited to the first 1,000 people to respond, so be sure to register early if you want to attend.

Educators, optometrists, and other public health professionals are working together to end the struggles of too many schoolchildren.

The first ever School Readiness Summit: Focus of Vision, sponsored

by the American Optometric Association, was held recently in Washington, DC. "Thanks to the School Readiness Summit, we're an important step closer to eliminating undiagnosed and untreated vision problems from America's schools," said AOA president-elect Dori Carlson, O.D.

"This is the first time we've seen such a broad and comprehensive group of educators and health care providers agree that the lack of eye exams for children is a problem and that we need to finally move toward fixing it," said Barry Barresi, O.D., Ph.D., executive director of the AOA.

"I'm hopeful that we are finally moving away from a failed and broken system and toward an era where every child begins school with all of the tools - including healthy eyes and vision - needed to succeed in school and later in life," said Dr. Barresi. Read the report here.

Do you know the top 5 signs of a vision problem that interferes with reading and learning?

The five most common signs that a vision problem may be interfering with your child's ability to read and learn are:

  1. Skips lines, rereads lines
  2. Poor reading comprehension
  3. Takes much longer doing homework than it should take
  4. Reverses letters like b's into d's when reading
  5. Has a short attention span with reading and schoolwork

Any one of these symptoms is a sign of a possible vision problem. A more in-depth symptom checklist is available on our website .

Don't wait! Schedule your vision therapy appointments today!

Amanda Zeller Manley, O.D. and Mehrnaz Green, O.D., F.C.O.V.D.
