Hi, I hope this
letter finds you well. I have some very interesting news to share today.
Two recent
articles indicated that many Americans are delaying and even forgoing
healthcare due to cost and also the care given may not be what is anticipated
due to lack of reimbursements and ability of hospitals to maintain positive
cash flow.
USA Today
reported last week in a survey by the American Academy of Family Physicians;
"six out of 10 respondents (doctors) said they were seeing more health
problems as a result of skipped preventive care, such as screenings, or
unfilled prescriptions." Ted Epperly, MD, president of the group, was
quoted: "what's become clear with this economic recession is that America
is sicker than it was prior to the recession."
Forbes Magazine reported that for many hospitals,
revenue has dropped; "cash-strapped patients are skipping visits, and
under-compensated cases are increasing." This means in laymen's terms that
hospitals are not getting paid for the treatments they are giving and their
income, which pays the salaries of their doctors, nurses and the electric bill
is not coming in. So they need to decrease their spending and cut back on
services they provide, or do them "cheaply". In fact, one "survey of more
than 1,000 community hospital CEOs conducted in March by the American Hospital
Association [AHA] found that nine in 10 hospitals had trimmed their budgets to
weather the recession." This prompted the vice president of the American
Hospital Association, Caroline Steinberg to state "consumers should have a
heightened awareness of how the economic pressures on hospitals relates to the
care they receive." This means in plain English, watch out, you could get
hurt!
These two articles and others, concerned about current
policy recommendations, rail at some of the concepts of healthcare reform which
try and frame our health care delivery as a business. In fact, the only real
health care crisis may be that most of our insurance premiums go into stoking
and fueling the system. Your doctor, nurse or other health care professional
are not "providers", they are trained professionals who by their nature are
caring and nurturing individuals. We need to be careful that this nature not be
repressed even further by the system, making them production line workers,
unfeeling or less caring, only looking to squeeze as little time and energy
into your care as permitted by the system. This is a potentially dangerous, not
to mention literally painful possibility. In fact, change is painful and although
reform is indeed necessary, it needs to have as its primary goal, maintenance
of a relationship that is caring and loving between the person making decisions
about your life and you!
BUT there is always a silver lining in any cloud, IF you are
open to seeing it.
AND there are simple, predictable responses and answers to
any crisis.
My answer is simple,
predictable and effective.
In fact, using this answer, you will benefit, no matter what
decisions "they" make.
Most of the disease and illness for which care is sought in
doctor's offices and hospitals is treatable by methods you can do yourself,
safely and effectively. In fact the majority of disease treated today in the United
States is high blood pressure, heart disease, elevated cholesterol and stress
or anxiety. These account for over 80% of office and emergency room visits.
Studies have shown that taking 20 minutes a day to meditate
and use easily learned self-hypnosis techniques, doing limited exercise and
making minor changes in your diet are all that are necessary to achieve the
same or better results in curing these problems with no or minimal need for
medication or surgery. YES you can do this yourself. This is the silver lining in the health care debacle cloud.
The "crisis" is simply a wake up call to those who have
their alarm clocks on that we had better all take control of our lives and
healing before we are injured or worse, by a system that really we don't want
to be in anyway. This is vitally important in that new studies show that many
of the injuries and problems treated are actually from complications of the
medications and procedure done to people in the name of healing. You can avoid
becoming a statistic.
As a surgeon I can
tell you without doubt, for I have seen the body heal from the outside and
inside. I have literally seen the miracles that result in life rather than
death. I've seen patients reverse
arthritis, I've seen severed nerves regenerate, and
cancer disappear. I know
that blood pressure is simply a physical manifestation of internal stress
responses that we all experience every day in our bodies and can be controlled
easily and effectively, as Dr. Herbert Benson showed at Harvard, many years
ago.
Healing is not what we have been led to believe.
Each of us has the very same capacity to heal and control
pain, discomfort and disease.
And it is much easier than you suspect.
I learned this secret to healing from my father, and he
brought it back from Burma half a century ago. I hope to pass this on to you.
I do not care if you learn it through my new book, "A
Surgeon's Self-Hypnosis Healing Solution, - my father's secret", or if you learn it through a yoga or tai chi class,
meditation course or your doctor. BUT PLEASE, for your sake and the sake of
those you love and care about, learn it.
These are dangerous times and yet they hold a wonderful
opportunity for all of us to grow.
You can be in charge of your own healing and life and it is
simple and effective. No big changes, not through extensive workouts or having
to give up everything you like to eat. Just little changes make all the
difference. You just need to know how. Further, doing so will save you money,
pain, time and enhance your life in ways you cannot even begin to imagine.
I will continue to write and help in any way I can to show
you the way. I hope you will join me on this journey to healing together.
Live long, pain free and prosper,
Scott
