As unbelievable as it may seem, hunger remains a significant problem in the United States.  For many Americans, the choice between buying food and paying utility bills is very real.  In fact, according to estimates, 33 million people in this nation aren't sure from where their next meal will come.  One in five children in this country faces hunger.  Hungry children, even those who experience only mild malnutrition during the critical stages of their development, may suffer irreparable harm.  These families rely on local agencies and faith-based institutions for much-needed food.

With this in mind if you find a Scouting for Food sign on your door on November 14, 2009, please fill a bag with non-perishable food items:  canned fruits and vegetables, dried pasta, hot and cold cereal, powdered milk, peanut butter, tuna fish and similar items.  Your local Boy Scouts / Cub Scouts will be by Saturday, November 21, 2009 by 10am rain or shine.  If you are unable to leave the bag out on the 21st please feel free to drop it off at your local food bank.

GET READY FOR CUB SCOUT SNOWCAPADES!

This program designed for Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and their families is held at Camp McLoughlin next to beautiful Lake of the Woods between Klamath Falls and Medford, Oregon.  The camp is at 5,000 feet elevation and experiences winter conditions ideal for fun in the snow.  Events include saucer runs, snowshoes, marshmallow roastin, zip lines, and much more.  It is a day long event with a hot lunch served in the dining hall.  The cost is $15 per youth and $10 per adult.  If your Cub Scout Pack or Girl Scout Troop is not signed up ask your leaders about it or take them the registration information found at www.craterlakecouncil.org and don't miss out on this great family outing!

REGISTRATION FEE INCREASE
The BSA National Executive Board unanimously passed a resolution at the business meeting on May 22 to increase the traditional membership registration fee for all youth and adults to $15 from its current $10, effective January 1, 2010.  The last fee increase, which was from $7 to $10, was in 2003.  The Exploring fee will remain $10.

A great deal of thought and consideration went into this decision by both the Executive Board and the Membership Fee Task Force led by National Commissioner Tico Perez.  Consideration was given to an expected deficit to the National Council operating budget, the impact to program and council support, the necessary funding required over the next several years, the cost of implementing fee increases annually in systems and forms, as well as the overall fees paid by councils.  Input was sought and received from staff and volunteers at the council level.  Finally, given all these considerations, it was determined that the best approach was to increase the fee to the level chosen and make every effort to hold that level for a period of at least three years.
