Note from the Scout Executive

Greetings!
It has been a great summer here at the Crater Lake Council.  With over 2,500 youth attending Council day camps and resident camps the energy was high all summer long.  These youth and adults enjoyed a great camping experience at our premiere camping facilities on Lake of the Woods and Crescent Lake.  Ask any Scout how he would best like to spend his summer and he will say "camping," the best thing about this is, while it's fun, leadership and teamwork are also reinforced.  These experiences will last a lifetime not just in memories but in life skills as well.

The 2009 Friends of Scouting campaign led by board member Bill Anderberg is going very well.  The Board Division has now raised over $101,000.  Bill and his team have done an outstanding job in difficult economic times.  As we continue through the year, we will be working with all of our campaign leadership to reach  the 2009 goal of $350,000.  We currently stand at $304,701 which is 88% of our goal.  Thanks go out to all of you who have contributed and participated in the campaign.

"A CENTURY OF VALUES" NATIONWIDE ROAD TOUR COMING TO JACKSONVILLE FOR LOCAL BOY SCOUT CENTENNIAL PREVIEW
"If you are going to celebrate a 100th anniversary, do it in a big way."  That's the philosophy of six adult volunteers from Michigan who will be visiting the Crater Lake Council during a unique 45,000 mile, year long road trip, helping all Boy Scout councils throughout the United States kickoff their local celebration of '100 years of Scouting's' role in character and leadership development.

Dubbed "A Century of Values," the road journey teams launched their official kickoff in Laingsburg, Michigan on February 8, 2009.  The caravan is winding its way across the country, scheduled to end in Irving, TX at the National Boy Scout Museum on February 8, 2010, the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in America.

Fourteen teams will rotate driving the 45,000 miles in a 32 foot colorfully decorated motor home donated by Coachmen Industries.  At each of the 300 plus council stops, team members will present local Boy Scout representatives with a framed 24" by 36" anniversary mural depicting famous individuals, places and events in Scouting history.  It was created by professional illustrator and Eagle Scout, Bill Morrison who has done design work for Disney and Hollywood animation studios and will be a kickoff for local centennial events.  It will be arriving here in Jacksonville at Bigham Knoll October 8, 2009 from 3-5pm.

All Eagle Scout alumni of the Crater Lake Council will be receiving an invitation in the mail for this once in a century event.  Immediately following the presentation will be a BBQ, which all alumni are welcome to attend.  For more information on the Century of Values tour go to www.acenturyofvalues.org.

REGISTRATION FEE INCREASE
The BSA Executive Board unanimously passed a resolution at the business meeting on May 22 to increase the traditional membership registration fee for all youth and adults to $15 from its current $10, effective January 1, 2010.  The last fee increase, which was from $7 to $10, was in 2003.  The Exploring fee will remain $10.

A great deal of thought and consideration went into this decision by both the Executive Board and the Membership Fee Task Force led by National Commissioner Tico Perez.  Consideration was given to an expected deficit to the National Council operating budget, the impact to program and council support, the necessary funding required over the next several years, the cost of implementing fee increases annually in systems and forms, as well as the overall fees paid by councils.  Input was sought and received from staff and volunteers at the council level.  Finally, given all these considerations, it was determined that the best approach was to increase the fee to the level chosen and make every effort to hold that level for a period of at least three years.
