Greetings!
What a beautiful spring we're having! The flowering trees planted around the island a few years ago are coming into their own and providing us with gorgeous spring blooms, and the weather has been glorious. The summer heat will be upon us soon!
To those who leave the island, remember that I'm available and accessible through the Internet. I'll post new paintings both here and on my website, and continue the practice of daily painting and posting on my blog. If you're around, stop into the studio. I'm there most Wednesdays and Thursdays till 3, or when possible by chance or appointment.
Thanks for your part in making it possible for me to do what I love. |

Everglades
The Everglades extends beyond the nation park, winding south from Orlando through Chain of Lakes and the Kissimmee River, encompassing Lake Okeechobee and flowing through the river of grass to the calm waters of the Florida Bay. Known throughout the world for its glorious sunrises, mysterious wetlands, and unique wildlife, the Everglades ecosystem is one of our world's natural cleansing and providing systems.
Floridians know that restoration of the delicate ecosystem known as the Everglades is vital to economic growth, job creation, and providing clean water for the next generation. Restoring the Everglades will improve the quality of life for the seven million residents of South Florida, improve flood control, supply essential water, and preserve more than 60 threatened and endangered species and protect the natural plant life for the next generation of Floridians and visitors to enjoy.
In 2007, Florida invested $200 million in Everglades restoration. This year that figure dropped to $50 million - a 75 percent reduction. The proposed budget would reduce Everglades spending even further to a mere $17 million.
That's way too low to ensure our future. Take time right now and send a letter to your state senator expressing your support for Everglades restoration funding. Tell your Senator that Everglades restoration is important and deserves state and local money. You can do this eaily through the Audubon site here. |
Collector's Corner
I talk with visitors in my studio all the time. It's interesting to see the various groups who come through. Some are just looking, but some people might be considering a purchase.
If you are interested in purchasing art, beware of who you come in with! At least one of most any group that comes through the gallery really doesn't want to look at artwork. They distract a potential buyer by talking non-stop about their own experiences, artists they know "back home," gossip about friends, how they used to paint, all without a look at the artwork in front of them. Other potential buyers are dragged quickly through by family not interested in art, or by a spouse who is not willing to consider an artwork they haven't chosen or don't understand.
Still, most of these people have at least some art on their walls. So, my advice to you is if you love and respond to a piece of art, take the time to determine if you really love it and want to live with it free of outside distractions. Take the time to consider whether it will fit into your home and is priced fairly for its quality.
When you purchase an archival piece of quality art, it should make your heart sing when you look at it. It should enliven and enrich your home, and be something you can be proud of for years. The artist puts heart and soul into creating a work of art and you, the buyer complete the circle. Don't let anyone, even a dear friend, rush or distract you!
Most serious artists are happy to have you take the piece home to for consideration. encourage this because the purchase has to work for both the artist and the purchaser to be successful. Many of my sales are to people who already own one or more of my paintings, and it pleases them enough to want another. That makes us both happy! |
Monthly Art Quote
" I have always tried to hide my own efforts and wished my works to have the lightness and joyousness of a springtime which never lets anyone suspect the labours it cost."

In the Studio Phew,
what a season! With the successful completion of the community program Arts Afire! and my solo show at Aura Gallery, completing commissions, daily painting and all the usual, I'm ready for some rest and renewal time.
There's one commission to finish, and another I'm excited about, but I'll start by doing my semi-annual studio clean up. I consider every painting carefully to ensure it's the best it can be.
Any that come up short will come out of their frames for a face-lift. There's usually at least one or maybe two of these. Some that have hung around the backroom for too long waiting for inspiration, are deemed hopeless and will be chucked out. Some will have a reprieve because I'm not ready to give up on my idea, even though it will be a while before the painting develops to my satisfaction.
I've got plans for several paintings to work on for the summer, and will try out some new ideas and techniques. |
