Greetings!
We have many visitors and snowbirds on Marco this time of year, all trying to escape the cold and snow of the frozen north. It's certainly our pleasure to have you back on the island. I love having you stop by the studio at the Esplanade and offer kind words of support or encouragement as so many of the people who own my paintings do.
I'm in the studio almost every Wed and Thurs till 3, and sometimes Friday. If that's not convenient, please give me a call and I'll meet you if I can.
There's a lot of great events coming up. Wet Paint is THIS week, I'll be having a show in Naples in February and am excited about the Fakahatchee Safari.

Everglades
Winter in the rest of the country finds the Everglades deep into their dry season, and despite the recent rains, this is the time of year that it's easy and more comfortable to visit the Everglades. The oppressing humidity of summer is gone, as are the heavy afternoon thundershowers that drench the landscape.
Most of the animals in the Everglades are affected by and dependent on the actions of the American Alligator, and the dry season is no exception. The alligators make and maintain water holes by excavating vegetation into deep depressions they then inhabit for the dry season. These wet holes ensure the alligator enough water for mating, and food sources in good supply so that the alligator will remain in good physical condition.
These holes are critically important to other species as they provide refuge for fish and other aquatic organisms as habitat dries out. Resources concentrate around the alligator holes, providing forage for birds, turtles, snakes, and mammals. Later in the year, the alligator's towering nests will provide refuge for species less able to handle the flooding that occurs during the wet season. The paths that the alligators make through the Glades provide game trails for other animals and act as natural fire breaks helping to control the necessary wild fires that are natural to the Everglades environment.
There are fewer life sustaining alligator holes than in the past because of habitat loss due to development and agriculture. As a result, many alligators will now stay near the deeper sloughs rather than build their own hole. Restoring traditional alligator behavior is one of the goals of the Everglades Restoration Plan.

Collector 's Corner
What kind of a collector are you? Some people will purchase a piece of orginal art to help make their home warm and inviting. They will select a painting that blends well with their furnishings and fits their space. They might enjoy purchasing from or meeting the artist, but once they have purchased their needs are met and they are unlikely to purchase again. Some will enjoy hearing from the artist from time to time, but others will move on to other things.
Other collectors will purchase an original painting every time they see something they like and can afford. They will find or make space in their home for their new artwork, and will move their paintings around every now and then for maximum enjoyment.
Some will choose an artist and follow their work. They may do this with several artists they admire. When new work becomes available they will be delighted to see it and consider purchase, and some will own several or more paintings by the same artist. I'm fortunate to have quite a few collectors with more than one piece.
As an artist, each and every one of these collectors is valuable to me. I'm excited when someone choses one of my paintings to bring into their life, and whether they choose one or many I welcome their interest in my work. I love my job, and YOU make it possible. Thank you! |

In the Studio
I've been working really hard to produce a great show at Aura Gallery on February 10th. Most of my new work comes from inspiration in the Fakahatchee, since it's been hard for me to get much further out than that lately. I've taken a few forays and brought back sketches and photographs to work from, and have come close to meeting my goal of producing at least one new painting a week for the show. If you follow my blog, you have seen a preview of the show, because I have been concentrating on that and posting the paintings when complete. I'm still doing my daily paintings, but do not quite meet my quota since the show has to take precedent, but will get back to that commitment as soon as possible.
The Everglades continue to inspire me, and I approach my easel each morning with happy anticipation. I feel so very fortunate to be able to have a job I thoroughly enjoy! |
Painting Marco
News about the Marco Island Arts Community
Many of Marco's artists will be painting around the City on January 27th for Wet Paint Live. Wet Paint Live is a partnership between Marco Island's artists, Leadership Marco and the Chamber of Commerce, the Marco Island Art League and the Marco Island Foundation for the Arts.
I'll be painting at the Esplanade since it's my usual day to work in the gallery. Please stop by and see how my painting develops. the finished paintings will be auctioned off that same evening, Thursday, Jan 27th. the proceeds will go to providing scholarships for Marco's youth.
It's worth coming to the auction if you have any interest in the art and artists of Marco, even if you don't want to purchase a painting. It's one of the only places to see so may of the artists and their work in once place. It's a lot of fun besides! |
