Uncommon Paintings, Lasting Value

Greetings!
People often say that fall is their favorite season. While I love a beautifully colored leaf as much as then next person, fall has always seemed a season of endings for me. It was the time the days grew dark early and the beach grew empty and the sun hid more often. Fall is more poignant than the deep coziness of winter,. I've been caught surprised to be tearing up at the first falling leaves.
Still, it's nice to have a bit of crispness in the air with the change of the seasons. This time of year the colors in the Everglades deepen and soften, with more mauves and purples, and light, rich golds. The bird population will increase as migratory flocks return for the season or rest briefly on our shores, Our snowbirds (people) will also return to enrich our lives and to take advantage of our temperate landscape.
As the heat decreases in Florida, the growing season will begin. It still seems a little backwards to someone from New England, but we'll put in some lettuce and tomatoes soon. Mums and pumpkins are starting to show up in the stores. Halloween is fun. Maybe fall isn't so bad after all. |
Everglades, The Fakahatchee
The Fakahatchee strand is a linear swamp 20 miles long and 5 miles wide and known as Florida's Amazon. The land contains the remains of the a large cypress strand that had been logged for the war effort in the 1940s. Four large canals drained the land and development ate away at its edges. Like most of the Everglades, the Fakahatchee has suffered much damage in the name of progress.
When the state acquired the land in 1974 it set out to protect the unique and irreplaceable landscape. The Fakahatchee is all about water flow. It contains a freshwater slough that is warmer in winter and cooler in summer than the ambient temperature. This helps to moderate temperatures within the swamp and provides habitat for a number of protected and endangered species.
Forty-four native orchid species and fourteen native bromeliad species thrive in the Fakahatchee. There's a large population of both resident and migratory birds who find food plentiful in the waterways and rough grasses.
Animals from snakes to black bear to racoons call the Fakahatchee home. Everglades minks hunt frogs in the wetlands and panthers prey on white-tailed deer in the uplands. Alligators and fish abound.
The State's water managers point to the Fakahatchee as a success story. There's still a long, long way to go, but you can read about the water's journey here. as part of the Everglades restoration. There's a wonderful video, and information about the elusive Ghost Orchids.
You can also take a walk into the Fakahatchee only a few miles off Marco at the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk. If you haven't been, put it on your to-do list. It's worth the trip. |
Thanks to collectors and friends who purchased in Setpember! I appreciate your support! |
Collector Corner
Original Art is art that has been made directly by an artist. It can't be repeated exactly, and there's only one of them. Original art is something unique and precious.
All of my artwork is original. There are no copies, giclees, or fake painting-prints on canvas. If it's a copy, or a reproduction it is not an original, and I prefer to sell only original art. Each of my small, daily paintings are unique originals as well.
Original art is immediately identifiable in your home. There is beauty, texture, an aliveness, a richness, that's lacking in a copy or print. A large, original piece of art can bring energy and focus to a room. Small pieces can become little jewels to bring you joy.
A quality piece of original art is also a lasting gift to future generations. It will bring pleasure long into the future. |

Art Speak
There are many different types of artist brushes. The acrylic paints that I use are most often put on the canvas with either a hog bristle brush or a brush with synthetic fibers. Expensive and lovely sable brushes are just to soft to withstand the beating of the heavier acrylic paints and are best suited to watercolors.
Bristle brushes come in several shapes. I tend to use fairly short bristles on a stiff brush. I start painting with a large 12 or 10 size, and work my way down to a smaller size as a paintings develops, and an even finer size for some tiny details and my signature. |

Artists Colony at the Esplanade |
In the Studio
Exciting times! The studio is in a bit of chaos as I'm preparing to move my studio to new studio/gallery space in the Esplanade on Marco Island. I'll share space with my dear husband, sculptor Bob Frettoloso, Goodland artist Darren Clack, and Marco artists Betty Newman and Tara O'Neill in the old Quiet Storm space. I'm stockpiling my paints, brushes, paintings, paint cart, frames, bags, boxes, chairs, and hope to be all settled into Sunshine Studios' new space on October 7th.
I've got several paintings in mind or coming due, so getting right to work will be important. Hours will be Wed-Friday 11-7, Saturday 10-4, or by chance or appointment. Hope you'll stop by! |
Painting Marco
News about the Marco Island Art Community
Congratulations to Artists Carolyn Burger, Inez Hudson, Tara O'Neill and Betty Newman, all my Art Marketing Salon members who who will all open studios in the Esplanade this month. Best wishes to them, and to the group studio/gallery as well!
An Artists Colony at the Esplanade has been made possible because Frank Delgado of Summit Management was willing to pitch a germ of an idea to owner A&N Enterprises. A & N was willing to take a chance! And, because the Marco Island Center for the Arts and the Marco Island Foundation for the Arts were able to stretch their minds around some new concepts and to join forces and work together in record time to make it a win-win situation for everyone.
We owe them all a deep debt of gratitude. | |
