Uncommon Paintings, Lasting Value

Greetings!

Some exciting news!  At the request of this artist, the Esplanade management has agreed to provide studio space for artists studios in vacant retail space in the Esplanade.  Shared spaces open hours and other requirements have been negotiated.

A group of artists are preparing to move their studios into the spaces, and there will be room for a group studio/gallery as well.  The leases will be graciously provided through our local arti agencies, the Marco Island Center for the Arts and the Marco Foundation for the Arts, so that everyone will benefit.

Having an arts community on the island will provide a reason to come to our end-of-the-road City of Marco Island. It's a small step, but an important one in our evolution and will help improve our identity as an arts community.  It will also give people something to do here beyond the beach.

Unless something sudently goes sideways, look for opening some time early October.  Until then, keep your fingers crossed!
Everglades, Fall
Explore the Everglades

Although it's fall on the calendar, the Everglades, unlike much of the nation, has only two seasons, wet and dry.  We're in the wet season now, and will be until the afternoon rains until the rains begin to diminish giving way to the dry season, which starts in November.

Rainfall in the Everglades can vary dramatically from year to year, and periods of drought and flooding should be expected.  In a very wet year almost 80 inches of rain could occur, and in a dry year less that 30 inches.

The environment  has adapted to this harsh regime of droughts, floods, and powerful storms from May through November.  Different Everglades plants and animals will thrive or decline yearly under these various natural events.

In addition to the almost daily afternoon thundershowers, tropical storms are common, and occasional hurricanes will bring rains to renew the region's fresh-water supply.

To humans, hurricanes can be catastrophic storms that damage our communities.  In the Everglades, hurricanes are a bonus, cleaning out pockets of dried foliage, opening up new areas for plant growth, and spread around seeds.  They also thoroughly mix and flush the salt and fresh waters south of Lake Okeechopee and change nutrient levels and placement.

These storms flush agricultural chemicals out of the soil and into our water supply.  The impact of these chemicals has resulted in negative ecological changes.

A broad range of groups and interests are concerned about the future of the Everglades water supply.  Conflicting priorities and escalating costs have made  develop strategies for protecting and restoring water quality and water quantity in the Everglades still elusive.

It's my hope that enjoyment of my paintings will highlight the need for reform, and that in the years ahead we regain respect for the natural systems that allow our planet to thrive.
Thanks to the collectors who purchased in August!  I appreciate your support!

Courage!

All too often, people lose courage at the last moment when contemplating the purchase of a piece of original art.  Why can we buy so many things without thinking twice about it, but must second guess ourselves over a painting?

"I'll own one of your pieces someday," they say as they walk away.  "I've looked at your work for years and love it", some say as they walk away.  "I love it, but can't afford it," some say as they walk away.

When an artist confronts a scene or an idea, they make choices at every step of the way to the finish.  They'll make decisions about what to include or leave out, the composition, the color choices, the nuances of brushwork and values.  In this creative process the artist gets great satisfaction when the completed artwork reflects the goal for that artwork. It's both a challenge and a joy.

When you stop to take a look at a piece of art, you slow down.  As you engage the piece, it transports you to another world.  Depending on the work, you may receive the benefit of having lower blood pressure and a sense of peace or tranquility, or a stimulated mind.

You don't need to decide if it's a great work of art.  Art is very subjective, and not everyone will respond the way YOU do to a particular piece.  All you really need is a deep sense of satisfaction when it's wrapped up for YOU to take home.

It brings me a deep sense of satisfaction when someone stops by to tell me how much they enjoy having my work around them.  When someone has the courage to purchase, it helps sustain me.  Thank you!

 Materials
Painting must happen on some sort of support for the paint, and the quality of the support is as important to me as the quality of the paint I put on it.  A good, tight, factory-stretched, triple-primed, medium weight and weave, cotton canvas is most often my choice.

Linen is a wonderful fiber, strong and long-lasting, but for painting it softens and sags too much for the active way I scrub the canvas.  Board, or canvas covered board is also a good choice for me.  This is not to be confused with canvas covered cardboard, which is not archival and a poor choice for anything but a lesson!

I special order the boards for my daily paintings from someone who makes them to order.  Having an appropriate strong and archival support support helps to ensure that the final piece will stand up to the test of time.

In the Studio
I've been busy with the project for the Center for the Arts birthday party in Novmeber.  My panel is done and will become one of 40 completed by Art League artists.  I'm working on two small commissions, and have been out to the Everglades several times to gather material, and have sketched and taken some reference photos.  Luckily, despite all the recent news, not a python to be seen!
