Uncommon Paintings, Lasting Value

Greetings!
What a hot summer we're having here on Marco Island. Seems to me like the hottest summer in sixteen years in SW Florida!
I don't miss the threat of hurricanes, (knock on wood) but the rain seems a little sparse. I'm hoping that we'll get enough water to get us through the upcoming dry season!
All of the images in this newsletter can be seen at the Blue Mangrove Gallery on Marco Island during the month of August. And if you see something you like, check out the coupon below for a bonus! |
Everglades, Summer
Explore the Everglades
Hardwood Hammocks
Unlike the tree islands on the wetland prairies and in the sloughs, hardwood hammocks are on just slightly higher ground that can support the growth of mature hardwood forest. Oak, pine, royal palm, cabbage palm, live oak, gumbo limbo, and West Indian mahogany are some of the trees living in hammocks.
Once much larger, these ancient tropical jungles serve many important purposes in the Everglades, Large trees provided habitat to birds and mammals, and their roots and leaves prevented erosion, and helped remove pollutants from the water. With out care and protection, they may reforest.
One way to experience the hardwood hammock is to take the Everglades National Park Mahogany Hammock Trail. Twenty miles (32 km) from the main park entrance and only 1/2 mile long, this self-guiding boardwalk trail meanders through a dense, jungle-like hardwood "hammock." You'll experience lush forest vegetation and get to see the largest living mahogany tree (Swietenia mahogani) in the United States.
I love this quote by Nelson Henderson "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit." |
Thanks to the collectors who purchased in July.
I appreciate your support! |
Collector Corner Follow your Heart!
We've already determined that when you decide to purchase a piece of original art, you will probably chose a piece that touches you personally in some way.
The work may depict something that interests you, or may evoke a personal experience or an event, past or present. Perhaps it reminds you of a favorite person or pet, or a fondly remembered landscape.
Art that makes you stop and look is speaking to you in some way. And when you when you take a second look, and then consider purchase, the creation of the artist probably resonates with something deep within you.
When you share the joy of creation with the artist and decide to purchase, you are entering into a partnership with the artist where each partner provides value to the other.
The artist provides the vision and uses their materials to delight, inspire, inform, or amuse you, and helps you to connect to something larger than yourself. You provide the means, both financial and emotional, for the artist to continue to work and grow.
An original art purchase provides mutual benefit. In addition, as a collector you will have something unique and beautiful that will bring pleasure and joy for generations. |

Art Speak
Something that always surprises people who see me demonstrate is that I start out my paintings on a dark background.
I order canvases in bulk, and when I get an order they're prepped with gesso if they need it. Then I mix a warm dark paint--not black--but a deep purple or blue, and cover all the new canvas.
I like having a selection of canvases ready, and the dark background keeps me from getting "empty canvas" anxiety. It also makes it easy to begin and work out composition issues right on the canvas.
There's something symbolic about working from the darkness to the light that I like, too! |

My work will be shown in two galleries this month!

In the Studio After two speaking engagements, preparing for two shows, and finishing two commissions, (phew!) I'll be getting out into the Everglades a little more this month. I'll be looking for some special gifts of nature to inspire a whole new set of paintings. I'll start some paintings on site and bring them back to the studio for further interpretation. This seems to work better for me than trying to finish the whole painting en plein air in a couple of hours! While I love the freshness of a plein air painting, back in the studio I can concentrate on the canvas as a whole and further develop the concept of what about the scene inspired me. |

News about Marco Islands Art Community
Congratulations to the Marco Island Center for the Arts 40th year of serving artists on Marco Island! There will be a birthday party on November 7, 2009.
Artists Betty Newman, Tara O'Neill and I have prepared 40 canvases for a special painting to commemorate the Center's 40th birthday. We've done the set up, and now 40 members of the Art League are invited to fill in a section of the painting with their own design.
If you're an artist member of the Marco Island Center for the Arts, you'll want to take part. Call 239-394-4221 to learn how to participate and to get your canvas!
And while you're speaking with them, don't forget to make your reservation for the party! | |
