Uncommon Paintings, Lasting Value

Greetings! ,

I'm beginning to find a pattern for the monthly newsletter, and hope that you'll enjoy getting and reading it.  I'll tell you a little about the landscape, something about my painting process, have a few tips for collectors, and tell you a little about the Marco Art Scene.

I'm hoping you'll enjoy it enough to forward it to a friend or relative who might be interested in receiving it.
It's easy to unsubscribe if you don't want it, just follow the unsubscribe below!

Everglades Summer
The Drama!
Exploration of the Everglades during the summertime can be brutal for the unprepared.  If you're going to explore during the hot and steamy rainy season be ready with plenty of water and a substantial supply of bug goop.  I speak from personal experience when I say that enormous clouds of unrelenting mosquitoes can chase you back to your car swatting and screaming.

Susan Orleans, in her book the Orchid Thief calls the Everglades in summer a "green hell."  to humans that may be an apt description, but for the land, it's a time of renewal.

Most hot summer afternoons are punctuated by torrential thunderstorms bringing  much needed life-giving water to the landscape.   Its a time of regeneration as the sloughs fill up and the water begins it's slow journey to the gulf.  The foliage thrives with plenty of water under the summer sun and the animals disperse to bear their young and repopulate the food chain.

Despite the rain, bugs and heat, the Everglades summer is a time of beauty and drama as the storms and strong light rakes the landscape.  It's worth the trip, and you may see me out there!
Many thanks to the collectors who purchased in June. I am particularly grateful for those who did so for their children!

Follow your Heart!

The most valuable bit of advice you will ever receive about collecting original art is to follow your heart!  The most important joy of collecting is not to purchase what you "should" have, but what you respond to in an immediate and visceral way.

Once you have seen a piece of art that that resonates with you, how do you decide if it's the right one for you to purchase?  It helps to know what kind of a collector you are.  If you will only be collecting until you have met your space and decorating needs, your decisions will be quite different than if you have other collecting goals.

Some collectors want to fill a space such as a home or office, and will probably not be tempted to purchase much beyond that.  Some collectors want to build an art collection.  They might be interested in a certain type of art, a certain medium, a subject, or style.  Some collectors will only purchase artists from their local area, or from an identifiable part of the country.

Do you have a spot for it?  Does your space require a vertical or horizontal piece?  If you acquire it will you have to rotate other works?  Can you sell or give away something you don't like as well?  Will the painting or sculpture fit comfortably with other pieces and within your "style"?  Can the color live happily in the space with the rest of your things? Do you love it?

If there are enough "yes!" answers to the above, you may want to ask a few more questions.  Is the painting priced fairly compared to other works you may consider?  Can you afford it? Is a quality piece?  Is the work a good representation of the work of the artist?  If there are enough "yes" answers, go ahead and purchase.  It should bring you much joy.
"But today is the only day that I can make the painting I'm destined to make today." Deborah Paris

The Artist's Palette
You may have a vision of an artist with her thumb through a large wooden palette, laden with a rainbow of color standing at the easel.  While most artists have many, many tubes of color, most choose only a few to put out for each painting.

One artist I know has a winter and summer palette.  Another tries different combinations all the time and charts the color combinations for each painting. Another limits her palette to three colors plus white.

I most usually choose a warm and a cool version of each of the primaries, plus another couple of colors appropriate for my subject of the moment.

Often when teaching I'll start students off with just the primaries plus white.  They're often surprised to find that the limited palette produced the most colorful painting of the workshop.

Throughout history obtaining, preparing, and mixing paints was much more difficult than it is today.  We're fortunate to find art stores filled with color, some natural pigments and others man-made.  How envious Turner would be to see a whole row of yellows!

Last month's speaking engagement went so well that I've been invited to speak to the Marco Island Newcomer's Club Luncheon on July 8th at noon.

You need to be a member of Newcomers, or the guest of a member to attend, so I can't really invite you to come along, but if you're interested, call me, and I'll try to hook you up with someone who'd just love to bring a guest!

Here's a link to a newspaper article about last month's luncheon
In the Studio
I'm busy working on a couple of commissions this month, and will show you them when complete.  I'm also working on ArtQuest 2010, the Foundation for the Arts international sculptor exhibition to be unveiled in the fall, and on a collaborative project with other local artists to help celebrate the Marco Center for the Arts 40th birthday coming up this fall.  The studio seems far too busy for summer but I"m not complaining!
