August 2012 - Catalyst! Newsletter
from Sue Cowan Coaching
                                                                                              Issue 23

Greetings!

When you receive this, I will be on holiday...somewhere along the Spey river (hopefully more on it than in it) in the Scottish Highlands, paddling en route to the sea. The wonders of modern technology, that I can prepare this in advance, to be sent out at a specified date and time...but I will enjoy the break, far from technology! We have to carry everything with us in our canoes for the 5-day guided journey. As I am a realist who expects to spend at least a little time tipped out of my canoe,  I will be leaving all gadgets behind, watch included.   BLISS!

Our family Olympic hero, Scott, had a fantastic games. As predicted, he did indeed swim the swim of his life! He swam personal bests, achieved a new Canadian record for the 100m breaststroke, becoming the first Canadian to do the distance in under one minute! He and his fellow teammates also reached the final of the 4X 100 medlay! You don't need to step up onto the gold medal podium to be a winner....
(Here's a link to an interview if you'd like to read his personal story).

This month's newsletter is in holiday mode, so it's short and sweet.
See you next month for more of the regular features.
Till next time,

No vacation in sight? Choose an everyday retreat...

"Going on a retreat" usually conjures up images of remote, sometimes exotic, locations for anywhere from a weekend to a month. When we can't afford the time away or the cost (or we've already used up all our holiday time) we can still derive some of the benefit by finding ways to

retreat and renew in our everyday lives.

I'm sure you could find at least one amongst this "Top 10" list that might just give you what you need from a retreat............

1. Spend a day doing what you love, not what you must. Paint, poke around the architectural salvage yard, take a book to the park - anything but what's on your to-do list.

2. Fast for a day. Fasting reminds us of the bounty of food available to us. It also lets the body rest from the busy-ness of digesting.

3. Spend a day in the garden. Or the container pots. Or a community garden. Anything to get your hands in the earth.

4. Go for a hike. Even an hour of one-on-one time with Mother Nature can reap huge relaxation dividends.

5. Spend a whole morning in bed - all day even!

6. Do a media fast for a week. Turn off all input-TV, radio, stereo, newspaper, Internet, videos, books-and see what insights "tune in."

7. Get a massage in your home. Follow that with down-time and the R&R is complete.

8. Take a long, hot bath. Candlelight, bath salts and wine optional.

9. Abstain from speaking. Silence leads to inwardness, even in the midst of family life.

10. Take a nap. These are especially delicious when strategically placed in your day.

How are you doing with your "Olympic challenge"?

london olympicsWith the Paralympic Games jsut around the corner, the Olympic spirit is still around...the perfect opportunity to revist the questions from last month:

  • How are you connected to something bigger than yourself?
  • What inspires you to greater heights?
  • How can the Olympic spirit inspire you to take up a challenge - not only in the fitness arena?

In your life, are you moving forward with a finish line in mind - going for your goal with clarity, focus and commitment?
Or are you running  "all over the place", with no direction?

  • What race will you decide to run? How will you begin, and continue, your journey to the gold?
  • What about your support team: who do you need onboard  to help you stay on course, to follow through and do what you know it takes?
  • And what will it look like to"win" once you get there?

Let me know if you need any help getting to your finish line.

Life lessons from Dr.Seuss

I am no longer surprised at the wisdom can be found inside the covers of children's books; many of you will know I am a great Dr. Seuss fan. The following are taken from different Dr.Seuss books and seem to be pretty good "life lessons", don't you agree?
Thanks for sharing this with me, Sarah!
