 A note from Sue

Hello!,
We are still enjoying a glorious summer here in Geneva...sometimes it has been too hot to work with full enthusiasm. Since the month is already almost over (it's still August as I write- just!)  I'll keep things short.....

What were the highlights in August for you? For me:  the Fireworks Finale to the Fetes de Genève was just spectacular. Talk about taking your breath away- and for 50 minutes!

Also, as a non-buddhist, hearing the Dalai Lama talk on "The Pursuit of Happiness" during his 2 day visit to Lausanne. And of course, moving into my new office space downtown.

What's been lighting your fire, taking your breath away, provoking your thoughts, and inspiring you lately?

Top Ten Fears That Keep Us From What We Want

Fear often stands between us and our ability to take actions, make decisions, ask for what we want - perhaps even to know what we really want. Fear is the gatekeeper of our comfort zone. But as poet-philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "He has not learned the lesson of life who does not every day surmount a fear." Below are ten fears that commonly get in our way and  keep us stuck.

1. Fear of being judged. Needing approval from peers or family can stop us from going after dreams or goals.
2. Fear of rejection.
3. Fear of emotional pain. Rather than incapacitate us, painful feelings can sharpen our sense of joy and gratitiude.
4. Fear of embarrassment. Making mistakes publicly is awful only when we let ourselves feel ashamed.
5. Fear of being alone/abandoned. A strong sense of self-worth and what we can offer the world can reduce this fear.
6. Fear of failure. A biggie for  most of us- and born of the notion that it's not okay to fail... Focus instead on the learning, and the trying. (You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.)
7. Fear of success. Can be just as scary as failure! More responsibility, more attention, pressure to perform: all this can be frightening when we don't believe in ourselves.
8. Fear of expressing feelings. Being authentic means being willing to express our true feelings: to loved ones, colleagues, adversaries....and to ourselves.
9. Fear of intimacy. Including emotional intimacy-really being seen by another- not only sexual intimacy.
10. Fear of the unknown. If we shift our fear to curiosity, the unknown can be exciting and thrilling.

Where do you hold back/ stop short?
Where in your life are you hiding in your comfort zone?
What would it take for you to get beyond the fear?
