Cenacle Prayer Enrollment was originally called the "Crusade of Prayer." It was launched in Boston on January 23, 1928 by Mother Mary Shannon in response to a financial need. A chapel and new wing was being built at the Boston Cenacle, and funds were needed to meet this financial obligation.
It was patterned after "The Lamp" started earlier in New York by Mother Helen Lynch to make the ministry of prayer better known to retreatants. "The Lamp" was the sanctuary lamp burning in a low bowl into which the names and intentions of retreatants were placed. A small offering was given, and each donor received a card with the symbol of the lamp on it.
Mother Shannon decided to provide attactive cards for those in need of prayer for various intentions. The plan received approval from Monsignor Joseph Walsh, who was the chaplain for the Boston Cenacle.
Use of prayer cards was successful and spread to the other Cenacle's in the United States at that time: New York, Newport, Ronkonkoma, and Chicago. After that, it was embraced by other Cenacle's in Canada, Brazil, England, Ireland, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
So Cenacle Prayer Enrollment has two goals: to promote the Cenacle prayer ministry and to provide funds. The Cenacle Sisters pray regularly for everyone who is enrolled. |
