Countdown to Coastal Cleanup Day 2012!

Come one, come all, to the largest volunteer event on planet Earth: Annual Coastal Cleanup Day!

Join your ocean community Saturday, September 15, from 9am-Noon to protect your ocean, river, lake, slough, and stream from the detrimental effects of pollution.

From Wadell Creek in the north to Big Sur in the south, Take Action with Save Our Shores at Annual Coastal Cleanup Day to prevent over 15,000 pounds of pollution from trashing our communities and wildlife.

"It Takes a Village"

Thanks to the support of our beach-loving donors, the first in a series of six Pollution Prevention signs with trash bag and Mutt Mitt dispensers was just installed at Twin Lakes State Beach. The signs show beach goers that it's up to the each of us - residents and visitors alike - to keep our beaches clean by cleaning up after ourselves. Two signs will be placed at Twin Lakes Beach and three at Seabright Beach.

With the threat of impending State Beach closures and reduced maintenance on our beaches, SOS looked to the support of our neighbors to protect these local treasures. It worked. Thank you!!

The Toast to the Coast Went off With a Bang!

This year's Toast to the Coast was one of our best Toasts to date. The sunny, 80 degree day and glowing sunset didn't hurt, but the real magic came from all of you! From our attendees, to our auction and raffle donors, to those who supported us through your Summer Raffle tickets, we are still riding the wave from this year's Toast.

Another tip of the hat to our 2012 Ocean Hero: Mark Stone for banning plastic bags in Santa Cruz County, our Business of the Year: REI for rallying beach cleanup volunteers, and our Volunteer (duo) of the Year: Haig and Sienna White for being true ocean champions!

And a special thanks to our Live Auction bidders (and winners!), Rod Caborn for being the best dressed Master of Ceremonies on Monterey Bay, the Seascape staff, and our own special dose of fabulous: Angela Chestnut and Dayna Zimmermann.

Advocacy Update

The City of Watsonville's bag ban takes effect September 7.

And as Mark Stone works to see that restaurants are included in Santa Cruz County's plastic bag ban in the coming months, SOS has been busy asking local restaurants to support the ban by voluntary stopping use of plastic bags at their place of business.

The County's bag ban is up for amendment to include restaurants at the Board of Supervisor's meeting on Sept. 25, time TBD. Show your support for the end of plastic pollution by speaking in support of this important amendment to Santa Cruz County's plastic bag ban!

Plastic bag bans continue to span the West Coast, having just passed in West Hollywood, Hermosa Beach, and Homer, Alaska.

Help us win the fight against plastic pollution!

Volunteer with Save Our Shores!

  • Saturday, September 15, 9am-Noon: It's Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at nearly 80 cleanup sites throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties!!

STOP Oil Drilling in the Arctic!

President Obama ignored dangers to critical Arctic habitat when recently approving Shell's drilling permit for the Arctic Ocean. Plans are in place to drill immediately, threatening the lives of polar bears, walruses, and bowhead whales. And Shell's oil spill containment vessel is still in Washington state!

The Arctic Ocean has largely been off limits to oil drilling. President Bush didn't even approve oil drilling permits in these waters. With the largest ice melt on record in the Arctic this summer, don't polar bears have enough threatening their habitat?

Island Breeze Zumba Party Saves Our Shores!

After seeing the SOS beach closure billboard on Highway 17, Azita Alaverdi of Island Breeze Zumba asked how she could help. Within no time, the upcoming Island Breeze Zumba Party at Coconut Grove was a benefit for Save Our Shores! And what happened next was just plain amazing: hundreds of high energy ZUMBA dancers shared ocean-oriented photos, videos, and plans for a plastic water bottle-free event on their facebook page. Consciousness was raised and spread like wildfire - just like that!

They raised $3,700 for SOS while having the time of their lives, and we now have a whole new batch of friends!

Thank you, Island Breeze Zumba Party, for Saving Our Shores!
