This is What Community is All About ~
Annual Coastal Cleanup Day 2012!

Curtis reaps the rewards of Stewardom

Considering becoming a Site Captain for your favorite beach this year? Or bringing your school group or neighbors to join you for Annual Coastal Cleanup Day?

And there's a beach, river, slough, or SCUBA cleanup with your name on it. Join us for the largest volunteer event on the planet - where people in over 100 countries around the world work together on one common goal: cleaning up our oceans, watersheds and communities!

Last year, over 4,500 volunteers worked together to remove over 17,000 pounds of pollution ~ this is what community is all about!

Neighbors Band Together to Protect Their Beach

Plastic Pollution Signage

When we heard the health of our State Beaches could suffer from

reduced funding, we started reaching out to our community. The Seabright Neighborhood Association quickly raised over $1,500 to protect Seabright Beach, and their efforts are catching on! Neighbors of Twin Lakes, Sally Shepherd, and the Kayak Connection are funding new Pollution Prevention signs with attached trash bag dispensers for Twin Lakes Beach. And longtime supporter Lisa Orser continues to educate the public to be stewards for marine animals with her support!

See what happens when neighbors come together to protect their favorite beaches and marine animals?

The State Parks Dept. was recently found to have $54 million in hidden accounts, which would have been more than enough to cover the missing $22 million in budget cuts. It's clear that budget cuts will continue to cause problems for our State Beaches. And SOS will continue to keep you informed of the latest news. Find out more...

Our Incredible July 4th and 5th Volunteers

Thank you to the 238 volunteers who participated in our July 5th Star Spangled Beach Cleanup! You kept 1,587 pounds of trash from polluting our ocean and harming marine wildlife. And thank you to our volunteers who spread the Pollution Prevention message to 5,660 beach goers while handing our nearly 1,700 trash and recycling bags on the Fourth of July! You are one of a kind, amazing, and part of a critically important movement to save our ocean and communities from the blight of plastic pollution.

Advocacy Update

On July 24th, the City of Santa Cruz passed it's final votes to go plastic bag free!

At the same meeting, the City Council passed the final vote to expand the Styrofoam ban already in place, which now prohibits the sale of Styrofoam coolers, cups, plates, bowls, and packing materials within the City of Santa Cruz. Both bans take effect January 24, 2013.

Thank you to the City of Santa Cruz and our local ocean advocates for your commitment to creating a plastic pollution-free Monterey Bay.

Now let's keep the momentum going:

  Fight Seafood Fraud!

Preventing Oil Spills one Boat at a Time

Curtis reaps the rewards of Stewardom
Did you know that small oil spills amount to more oil in our waters than the spill of the Exxon Valdez?

As part of our Clean Boating campaign and ongoing outreach about Marine Protected Areas, DockWalker volunteers hit the harbors of Santa Cruz, Moss Landing, and Monterey each summer to hand out oil absorbent pads and talk to boaters about proper oil spill prevention.

If you or someone you know spends time aboard one of the 28,000 boats in Monterey Bay each year, point them to our Clean Boating page...
