Pollution Prevention is Patriotic this July!

Curtis reaps the rewards of Stewardom

This Wednesday, July 4, 1-5pm:

Volunteers are needed to hand out trash and recycling bags on our busiest beaches.

This Thursday, July 5, 8-10am: Patriotic volunteers will join forces for the Star Spangled Beach Cleanup, the second largest beach cleanup of the year!

Last year, 263 volunteers prevented over 1600 lbs. of pollution from littering our beaches and harming marine life. Find out all you need to know and get involved today...

An Update on State Beach Closures

Billboard on Hwy 17

The photo above of our billboard on Hwy 17 encouraged our community to petition the Governor to keep our State Beaches open. It worked!

Governor Brown just approved $10 million in funding to help keep open the State Parks slated for closure. No State Beaches will be closed today, which is the good news, but maintenance efforts WILL be reduced on these beaches - as funding is stretched thin between all of the State Parks that have not been 'saved' by a third-party entity.

We are committing to increasing our cleanup efforts on these beaches, while also working with local neighborhood groups to raise funds and place Pollution Prevention signs with trash bag dispensers at our local beaches. Find out how YOU can be part of the solution here...

Tsunami Debris Hits the West Coast

SOS Logo

In anticipation of tsunami debris washing up on our local beaches, Save Our Shores recently created an addition to our data collection that will track tsunami debris found during beach and river cleanups.

If you happen to encounter tsunami debris:

  • Be safe, use common sense, and follow general safety rules.
  • If you don't know what it is, please don't touch it.
  • If it appears hazardous, contact the authorities.
  • Report items or debris accumulations to disasterdebris@noaa.gov with as much information as possible.

Find out who to contact, what to watch for, and more on our tsunami debris response page...

 Stop seismic testing!

SOS LogoUnderwater seismic testing sounds like dynamite and carries for thousands of miles. Dolphins and whales can suffer hearing loss from the noise, and be cut off from communication among their pods, mothers and babies, as well as prospective mates.

The Dept. of the Interior is proposing seismic testing in the Middle and South Atlantic, the only known calving grounds of the endangered right whales, and home to tens of thousands of dolphins and whales. Don't let it happen, speak up for marine mammals today!
