We want YOU to get Patriotic for Clean Beaches

Make Pollution Prevention Patriotic with Save Our Shores this Fourth of July. It's fun, easy and you're on the beach!

June 7 Kickoff FlyerOn Wednesday, July 4th, 1-5pm: Pollution Prevention volunteers are needed to hand out trash and recycling bags on our busiest beaches. You'll also encourage beach-goers to properly dispose of and pack their trash.

On Thursday, July 5th, from 8-10am: Patriotic volunteers will join forces for the Star Spangled Beach Cleanup, the second largest beach cleanup of the year!

Why? Because when the revelry is over and the visitors have gone, our beaches are left trashed with thousands of pounds of debris.

Doin' it for the Ocean: Our Star-Studded PSA

PSA stars doin' it for the ocean

What began as a prize won in a bowling game by John Laird, California's Secretary for Natural Resources (we hear he's quite the bowler)... Evolved into a fun and flawless PSA shoot with Save Our Shores, our local PSA stars, and the amazing crew from Community TV of Santa Cruz County. Thank you to our stars Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, John Laird, and Fred Keeley for lending us your time and bringing laughs to everyone on set. Check out the photo album from the PSA shoot...

Advocacy Update

On June 26, the Santa Cruz City Council will vote on a city-wide plastic bag ban. Join Save Our Shores and let your voice be heard on this important ocean-protecting ordinance at 7pm in Council Chambers.

On June 5, the Carmel City Council will cast their vote for a plastic bag ban in Carmel. Take Action by joining Save Our Shores in support of the bag ban at at 4:30pm in Council Chambers.

People often ask us why they still receive plastic bags at the store even after Santa Cruz County outlawed plastic bags. Here's why:

The bag ban for Santa Cruz County does not apply to the incorporated cities of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Watsonville, and Scotts Valley - which each have their own governance - the City Council. So it's a good thing Watsonville swiftly passed a bag ban last month and Santa Cruz is moving full speed ahead. This will leave just Capitola and Scotts Valley to go plastic bag-free before a FULL county-wide ban is set.

Plastic bag bans around the state and around the world:

  • LA becomes largest US city to ban plastic bags!
  • Solana Beach, Watsonville, and Mendocino County ban the bag.
  • Hawaii becomes first US state to ban plastic bags AND paper bags made with less than 40% recycled content!
  • Davao City in the Philippines and Mahabaleshwar, Srirangam, and Samayapuramm in India ban plastic bags.
  • Sea World theme parks begin plastic bag phase out!

Help us win the fight against plastic pollution!

Protect Coral Through the Endangered Species Act!

More than two-thirds of the world's corals could disappear before the end of this century due to global warming, ocean acidification, and overfishing.

Over the next few months, the National Marine Fisheries Service will decide whether to grant protections for our vanishing corals by listing them as threatened or endangered.

Please Take Action to protect the backbone of our oceans - coral!
