Advocacy Update

The City of Watsonville approved a ban on single-use plastic bags!
SOS Executive Director Laura Kasa gave public comment in support of the ban at the Watsonville City Council meeting on April 24th. Watsonville staff handed out colorful reusable bags to everyone in attendance. And in a surprising turn of events following Laura's public comment, Watsonville Mayor Eduardo Montesino amended the ordinance to go into effect in three months time, rather than the standard six! Thank you, Watsonville City Council and staff, for cleaning up our communities and watersheds with this important local ordinance.
The County of Santa Cruz expanded their ban on Styrofoam! The ban now prohibits retail sale of foam products such as plates, cups, bowls, peanuts, and coolers. SOS will be working with the county to outreach to local businesses impacted by ban, effective October 17.
The City of Carmel continues to move forward with their own ban on single-use plastic bags. The ordinance will be heard again at the next planning commission meeting - Take Action to support a plastic bag ban for Carmel by attending the meeting on May 9!
Help us win the fight against plastic pollution!

Keep up the pressure to END Offshore Oil Drilling!
The BP Deepwater Horizon disaster spilled 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest marine spill in history.
What's worse is that1.8 million gallons of toxic dispersants were also dumped into the ocean, creating the largest toxic experiment ever conducted in a body of water.
Please sign the petition and voice your support for banning all offshore drilling in any new areas and promoting renewable energy technologies and research!
