Presenting the Long Awaited Plastic Bag Ban!

The End of the Line movie

On March 20, stores in unincorporated Santa Cruz County will no longer hand out plastic bags. THANK YOU to our Supporters, the County Board of Supervisors, and all of you ocean advocates out there for protecting our ocean with this plastic bag ban!

Find out where SOS will be giving away reusable bags on March 20!

Threats of a lengthy legal battle from the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition led to the removal of restaurants from the ban. But that didn't stop SOS! We've been hard at work asking restaurants in unincorporated Santa Cruz County to voluntarily stop using plastic bags.

Three cheers for local businesses creating a healthy Sanctuary: Betty Burgers, Pleasure Point Eatery, Deli-Licious Cafe, and Davenport Roadhouse are the first four restaurants blazing the trail toward sustainability by ditching plastic bags.

Does your restaurant want to go plastic-bag free?  Let us know!

Just remember to Bring Your Own reusable bags everywhere you go - including restaurants - and you'll be all set!

But you won't see the end of plastic bags within city limits of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Watsonville, or Scotts Valley yet. Each city needs to pass their own ban on plastic bags now. And we have a long road ahead.

Support your local bag ban and a healthy Sanctuary today!

Let's make even more progress this year!

Advocacy Update

Santa Cruz County's plastic bag ban takes effect March 20!  See our feature story above or check our webpage for details.

The City of Monterey's plastic bag ban goes into effect in June. Monterey was fortunate and did not face a lawsuit by the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, which means they were able to pass their ban without the hassle!

The City of Santa Cruz is moving forward on their plastic bag ban. Take Action to pass this ban at the City's Transportation and Public Works Commission hearing March 19! Meet us at Council Chambers at 7pm to show your support for this ocean-saving ban. Take Action again on March 27 when City Council is scheduled to hear the ordinance.

The City of Capitola put their plastic bag ban on hold after threats to sue from the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition were heard loud and clear.

Sometimes, the issues seem too big to solve. But when you can break something big into smaller pieces, it suddenly seems manageable.

That's how we see local bans on single-use plastic bags. County by county, city by city, the local bans are spreading. And our rivers and oceans are loving it!

A new study shows that less than 5% of plastic bags are ever recycled. Recycling is clearly not the answer, no matter what the plastic lobbyists keep telling us.
