Santa Cruz County Sued over Plastic Bag Ban
The Save the Plastic Bag Coalition is at it again, and this time their sights are set on Santa Cruz County.
The lawsuit filed by this corporate interest lobbying coalition challenges the county's ban on single-use plastic bags. Save Our Shores and the County of Santa Cruz are confident this suit will follow in the footsteps of other similar lawsuits filed by the coalition - that of defeat. The right to protect our environment and communities from the blight of plastic pollution will not be silenced. Save Our Shores will keep you posted.

Sanctuary Stewards are the volunteer leaders of Save Our Shores. They run beach cleanups, staff community events, provide Marine Education Programs in our schools, and contribute their many talents and experiences to the SOS team throughout the year.
Each February, a new class of Stewards begin a dynamic spring training session where they learn the skills and knowledge they need to start an exciting season of leadership on behalf of the marine environment. Sanctuary Stewards are the backbone of Save Our Shores.

CA Passes Bill to Ban Shark Finning!
AB 376, the bill to ban the sale, trade, and possession of shark fins in the state of California, was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. CA joins Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and Guam, each of which have passed bans on the shark fin trade. Shark finning is restricted in all US waters, and reports estimate 73 million sharks are killed worldwide each year for their fins alone.
SOS Says NO to No Otter Zones
An end to the unjust and controversial 'No Otter Zones' in southern California is back on the table thanks to a renewed effort to put a stop to No Otter Zones once and for all. Public hearings on the topic took place in each CA county, and SOS was quick to attend the meeting in Santa Cruz County and speak in support of an END to No Otter Zones. Read more...
City of Capitola Expands Styrofoam Ban
Capitola became an even stronger ocean ally this month when expanding the City's Styrofoam ban to prohibit retail sales of any disposable Styrofoam products such as plateware, to-go ware, and coolers. This is one of the toughest Styrofoam bans out there today. Good work, Capitola!

Put Marine Life Ahead of Profits
Oil and gas companies put the lives of thousands of turtles, dolphins, and marine animals at risk on a daily basis. So why is it that an industry busy devastating our environment gets over $4 billion in tax breaks a year?Oil and gas companies are the highest profiting industries of our time. Ask Congress to put an end to tax breaks to companies that don't need it!
