Thank You Annual Coastal Cleanup Day Volunteers!

Kiddos at Cowell Beach
On Saturday, September 17th, in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, 4,584 volunteers participated in Annual Coastal Cleanup Day 2011. At 81 different cleanup sites from Wadell Creek in the north to the Big Sur coast in the south, and spanning over 157 miles of beach, river, creek, slough, lake, and even underwater - our volunteers were a force to be reckoned with.

Arroyo Seco CleanupThe combined efforts in both counties cleaned up over 17,500 pounds of pollution, including over 23,000 cigarette butts and 4,300 plastic bags! A Proclamation declaring September 17, 2011, as Save Our Shores Day in the City of Santa Cruz was even presented to SOS at Cowell Beach.

Victory! Santa Cruz County Finally Bans the Bag

 Victory Dance Ban the Bag!

After 2 years of advocating for a ban on single-use plastic bags in Santa Cruz County, Save Our Shores is finally doing the victory dance.

In the words of Santa Cruz County Supervisor Mark Stone, who spearheaded the ordinance, "The detrimental impacts of single-use plastic bags are indisputable. From the oil needed to manufacture and transport bags around the planet to the massive amount of plastic trash destroying our oceans, threatening marine life, and contaminating our food web, this relic of the past is a wasteful contributor to pollution." Two weeks ago today, SOS volunteers removed over 4,300 plastic bags from  Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties during Annual Coastal Cleanup Day. It's up to the locals to Take Action to protect our environment from the blight of plastic pollution. Join the I Heart Clean Beaches team today!

Take Action to Ban the Bag in Monterey County
 Ban the Bag!
On Monday, October 3, from 6-8pm, advocate for the health of your marine environment by joining in on the round-table discussion for a plastic bag ban in the City of Monterey.

Local ordinances really do work, but they need the continual, echoing voice of support from the community. Come be a part of this local revolution, change policy for the better, an
d do away with disposable plastics that plague our environment once and for all. Sorry, plastic bags, but we're taking you down!
Meet us at Monterey City Council Chambers, 580 Pacific St., Monterey

Dive the Bay Tests the Waters on October 15

Dive the CoastWhat do you get when a group of SCUBA divers come together to raise awareness about the growing number of threats to our ocean? It's called Dive the Coast.

On Saturday, October 15th, a test-run relay dive called Dive the Bay will take place out of Monterey aboard the Silver Prince. Divers will relay a float from one group to the next for a total distance of about 10 miles to test the waters for the larger, official Dive the Coast relay dive sometime in 2013. Visit divethecoast.com to learn more or join the discussion on the forum.

Our own Lauren Gilligan will join the divers on Oct. 15 to dive and raise awareness about Marine Protected Areas, our underwater state parks.

To reserve a space on the Silver Prince on October 15, call 204-0539 or email Charters@SilverPrinceCharters.com.

Support Marine Protected Areas

Take Action for Marine Protected Areas

Our oceans are in a state of rapid decline. Federally regulated Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) protect and conserve marine life and habitats for generations to come. They allow depleted, over-harvested species a chance to bounce back after decades of misuse and overharvesting.

That's why we need a solid network of Marine Protected Areas. Urge Governor Jerry Brown to take a leadership role on a statewide network of Marine Protected Areas for California, which will in turn set the stage for other states and nations to follow suit. Our oceans are one of the most valuable resources on the planet, and they desperately need your voice of support.

New Marine Protections for California
MPAs Rule

On January 1, 2012, 49 new Marine Protected Areas will create the Southern California network of MPAs. The area will span from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County down to the U.S./Mexico border, protect 354 square miles of state waters, and account for about 15% of the waters in that region. Researchers will monitor the MPAs inside and out to help determine the effectiveness of the MPAs in meeting the goals of the Marine Life Protection Act.
