Rally Call: Advocate for a Plastic-Bag Free Santa Cruz County on Sept. 13!
We need your voice of support to pass the Santa Cruz County ban on single-use plastic bags once and for all! This is the FINAL public hearing on the bag ban ordinance, and because we've heard that the American Chemistry Council will be at this meeting to speak out against the ban, we need YOU to join us in support of this local ban.
Take Action for your Sanctuary! Meet us on Tues, Sept. 13 at 9am, 701 Ocean St, Room 525, Santa Cruz.
Please sign the petition in support then post it to your facebook page or email the link to your friends and neighbors to finally pass this ban! Its up to us, the residents of Santa Cruz County, to show our local leaders we want to live in a community free of plastic bag litter.
Highlights from the Toast to the Coast Beach Party
This year's Toast to the Coast took place right in the sand at Seascape Beach Resort. We were graced with warm weather, delicious food, and wonderful entertainment by the Hula School of Santa Cruz, the Victor Ohana Hawaiian band, and a dance party courtesy of Santa Cruz DJ. It was a great time had by all.

Congratulations once again to Dan Haifley - our 2011 Ocean Hero, Scott Malson - our Volunteer of the Year, and Charlie Hong Kong - our Business of the Year. Thank you to all of those who attended, as well as all of Sponsors and supporters, and we'll see you next year!
Pro-Plastic Messaging Pollutes California Textbooks
The photo above was taken in Salinas, CA
It's been all over the media the last couple of weeks - news that the influence and lobbying power of the American Chemistry Council successfully got pro-plastic messaging into environmentally-focused lesson plans of California textbooks. The section is called 'Advantages of Plastic Shopping Bags' and you can see a glimpse of it here...
We sent an appeal out to our entire readership last week to inform you of the news and ask for your support to keep pollution prevention education in our classrooms through Save Our Shores' marine education program.
We might not have the money or lobbying power the American Chemistry Council does, but we do have the power to educate our youth with environmental truth and organize our community to protect our environment.
Join us in our fight to keep plastics out of our oceans and our classrooms!

Help Pass a Statewide Styrofoam Ban in CA!

Deadline: Tuesday, Sept. 6
SB 568, the bill to ban polystyrene (Styrofoam) take-out containers from food vendors statewide, is up for vote again in the California legislature. The bill has plenty of opposition from the plastics industry, so needs all the support it can get from California residents and restaurant owners.
Take Action against plastic pollution!

A Plastic Pollution Victory in Salinas!
We are celebrating the recent success of our grassroots campaign to garner community support for a polystyrene ban in the City of Salinas. Our thanks to Matthew Spiegl and Carolyn Rudolph for helping pass this ban, and all of those who signed the petition or attended the City Council meeting to voice their support.

Said SOS Executive Director Laura Kasa, "For the first time in 5 years of attending these kinds of meetings, the American Chemistry Council didn't send their reps in suits. Manufacturers and the Restaurant Association didn't show up. It just goes to show that sometimes a true grassroots effort is the only way to make the right thing happen in a community."
